The Penguin Group book publisher will release Tetsu Saiwai's biographical manga about the current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. The book's title is The 14th Dalai Lama: A Manga Biography, and it will appear in bookstores on September 28.

The Dalai Lama is the leader of the Tibetan "Yellow Hat" Buddhist sect, who believe him to be the reincarnation of a line of enlightened beings. Gyatso was born in 1935 and was recognized as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama at the age of two. He assumed his role in 1950 at the age of 15, when China invaded Tibet. He began working towards world peace and was awarded the Nobel Peace Price in 1989.

Saiwai is a Japanese manga creator. This is his first volume published in English.

The 14th Dalai had been previously released by Emotional Content, a small publisher specializing in biographical manga about historical figures. The Penguin version of the volume is 208 pages long with a suggested retail price of US$15.00. It is rated "18 and up."
