I agree on the whole Generative AI thing. I remember when the mainstream media was also saying nfts were the future, then in less than half decade later it died.

When there is a new shiny toy that still is pretty weak, performance wise, getting billions pumped Into it while the people supporting it say "its inevitable" the red flags in my brain start setting off

Of course a company says AI is "inevitable" because that is the narrative they want to push. But, Sega is the same company that had a New Year's letter saying blockchain was going to be the next thing, and then a year later had a letter basically saying, "You guys don't get it, it's definitely the thing," and then a year later admitted blockchain was not the thing. Big tech companies dumping so much into it are going to look pretty dumb to investors if they can't at least act like this is going somewhere.

So far, I haven't seen where they've come up with solid ideas of how AI will make money for them, but rather it's being positioned as a way to not spend as much making things that already exist because people are eliminated from it. As much as Sega might think having AI do the coding will help, I can see it having the opposite effect. The reduced workforce might not know what is wrong with the code because they didn't make it, and they might not have any idea what the AI was trying to do. Instead of AI being used to help do things like check for errors that a human might miss after their eyes glaze over at the end of the day, they want people to be the glorified spellcheckers for a program. It's utterly backwards.

The AI thing might explain why there was a P5X social media post that had an AI voiceover the other day, and it really rubbed the community the wrong way, particularly because a lot of the playerbase wants an ENG dub for the game.

If there's any sort of silver lining coming out of Sega this morning, the Persona 5 Phantom X account posted a developer letter saying they're fixing up some of the monetization problems the Global launch had, and things are actually looking really great for the game now - assuming they stick to their word. If it actually happens, it's probably gonna wind up being my favorite Persona/SMT experience I've played until now.

-Taimanin: I mean, if we really want to get into it, The Koga Ninja Scrolls is so old it basically invented a lot of ninja cliches in general and literally set up the "miniboss team" that pervaded a lot of Japanese fiction. Anyway, just a weird thing to think about bringing up Basilisk again

-Chibi-Robo: Ah, good to see Nintendo is diving into the more obscure stuff right away.

-Sega: Sega, stuff like this is why you had to retreat from hardware platforms entirely. You let mercurial creatives chase shadows, executives makes boneheaded decisions, and it blew up in your face. It's repeatedly been proven that AI doesn't work, it's so error-prone you need to hire people to correct its constant mistakes anyway. You're not saving time or money, if anything you're creative new problems and adding obstacles.

It's the same thing with NFTs, the blockchain, etc in that a bunch of venture capitalists types were stuck with bad investments. They're so desperate to force it into everything to the point a lot of them are now facing lawsuits from companies like Disney. Like NFTs, it's going to collapse and a lot of idiots are going to be stuck holding the ball. It's no surprise junk like this had cropped up as the tech industry has seen major slowdown in releases to the point where new iPhones are looking to not be yearly anymore. It's not gonna be about new stuff anymore, it's gonna be about "boring" stuff like maintenance and efficiency which VC types HATE. Hence why we've also been seeing tech junkies freak out and have to realize the graphics war is coming to a close.

Seriously Sega, back off on this or you're gonna regret it

Konami also announced AI announcers for Master Duel which will comment on your games in real time which seems kind of neat.

I don't think AI is just there to be an auto-game generation machine or anything but it can certainly be used for music, art, and voice overs which I've seen plenty of companies both in and out of the video game industry do. already for awhile now. I've already seen AI artists making tons of money and art on Pixiv and Japanese storefronts like BOOTH.

I think overall arguments against AI are becoming more and more unpopular and niche as time goes on. Mainly because South Park used AI in a recent episode and the vast majority of people loved it and it was one of their most popular episodes. I think at this point it's a losing battle to try to be against AI if we're at that stage now.

That's the same song-and-dance we heard about crypto and blockchain tech, and those are both in the circular cabinet Laughing "Fool us once..."

Also, I'm gonna go on a limb here and say that AI "artists" are thieves. There was one artist I was planning on commissioning but he just uses an AI engine that copies another artist's entire style. And he charged $100 per commission! $100, just to type some words! Jog on. The value of art isn't its convenience, it's in the effort people put into it. That's why crypto and blockchain failed, and it's why AI is dying out. For crissake, the whole shebang can't even deal with the yellow filter from having used that Glibli-style that one time.

Yeah dissent against AI is so unpopular and niche that Konami pre-emptively disabled comments on their YT announcement about their terrible AI announcers. Because people just love AI so much, they would've filled the comments with too much praise and would've overloaded the YT servers with their love

And definitely no ongoing PR disaster surrounding YT's terrible attempts at AI dubbing flagrantly trying to steal people's voices without their permission and not even doing a good job at it as it crushes the surrounding audio and turns videos into unlistenable messes

That's such a flag they might as well have said "I am one day away from retirement!"

As usual look to Nintendo for what's going on with AI and so far they're not interested. Considering how right they were with NFTs, I doubt they'll be wrong this time

No offense, but anyone who pays a dime for AI "art" is a complete fool. Just type in the damn prompts yourself if you want it that badly.

And me being me, you can count on me to take part as only I can! I've shared my opinions on Power Rangers in the past, but those teenagers with attitude always made sure to support local efforts whenever they could. I figured Captain Marvelous and Minami Kotaro wouldn't be against that, yeah?

I mean, in the Captain's own words, that's what being a pirate is all about Cool

I may have mentioned it here but someone smarter than I pointed out that computing is effectively solved. You can make code for just about anything and the limit is human imagination. We already had predictive and generative engines for text and pictures (e.g. fractal art), we probably had them for music too. Automation had already existed. AI doesn't solve any computing problems. The "problem" it's supposed to solve is labor spending, and then it's only a "problem" if you hate people.

Here's something that's inevitable: Sega losing business because aren't there actual studies out there already that say that if a business uses AI, then they'll lose customers because of it?

Chasing a trend, a horribly unpopular one, is ridiculous and these companies keep doing it every time anyway.

Recently, Microsoft laid off 9,000 employees in a bid to support generative AI efforts—that's 110% of Nintendo's global workforce. While not all of those were employees of Microsoft's gaming branches, every last one of those employees could have been a Yū Suzuki, a Rieko Kodama, a Koji Kondo-—hell, maybe even a Kenji Eno. Any one of those 9,000 people could have had an idea that became the next Binding of Isaac or Donkey Kong

"Could have been" is doing a lot of optimistic lifting in this paragraph. It's more likely they would have made the next Redfall, Forza Motorsport, or any other failed game Microsoft put out. Their gaming division has been hurting for ages but I don't think anyone they let go was their golden ticket to getting out of that rut. Bethesda can only carry them for so long.

Not everyone has a $2000+ graphics card to train their stuff on.

Here's an idea: just commission an actual artist to draw actual art

I've commissioned artists on Skeb in the past but these days when you can get an image set for 1000 yen that has 1000+ images of perfectly on model artwork it's a lot more cost effective than paying 20,000 yen for 1 image and it might not even turn out that well in the end as some of my Skeb commissions have turned out. I see why some artists hate AI because how are they realistically supposed to compete with that outside using the stuff themselves? I don't see a way.

Yeah, for some reason I'm skeptical that the art is "perfectly on model" and doesn't look like embarrassing slop to anyone with a more discerning eye than those who would unironically pay for AI art because they can get it in bulk like they're shopping for toilet paper
