How was the first episode?

Rating:
Mission: Yozakura Family is a series with a great premise and a fun cast of characters that has consistently been hampered by its lackluster execution. The work being done by studio SILVER LINK is never so poor that it could be fairly described as “bad,” per se, but there's a distinct lack of polish and life to this wacky mix of romance, espionage, and anime action that pervades the entire show. If you're just some random Japanese middle-schooler tuning into their favorite show each week, this isn't something you're likely to notice, but for people whose living depends on experiencing all of the highs and lows that this industry has to offer, it is impossible to ignore how aggressively middle-of-the-road Mission: Yozakura Family is as a work of animation.
That said, the fun characters and silly premise do a lot to carry the show despite its shortcomings, which is exactly what we see here. Taiyo and Mutsumi make for an excellent couple, especially now that they've officially tied the knot, and the Yozakura siblings are as ridiculous as ever. What this episode makes plain, though, is that it's the newest member of the family who will be getting a lot of the attention this season. No, our heroes haven't popped out a baby of their own just yet, but the conspicuously adorable Ai has returned to the Yozakura home to take up the position of the figurative offspring that Taiyo and Mutsumi will raise together.
To be honest, I wouldn't have minded if there had been a little more build-up to all of the developments that go down in this premiere. We run through the predictable beats of Ai arriving, being all cute, having second thoughts about belonging to a family, and then being reassured by the all-powerful love of Papa Taiyo that this is her home, all in the span of just one episode. Less than one episode, really, because the back third of the premiere is a B-story about Kyoichiro accidentally eating an experimental vitamin pill that turns him into a preteen. It's the usual sort of nonsense for this family to get involved in, but given how significant a development Ai's permanent addition to the household is, you'd think Mission: Yozakura Family could have afforded to save the frivolous stuff for at least one more week.
Still, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little glad to be back spending time with the Yozakura clan. At this point, we can all admit that the show is probably never going to live up to its full potential, but the source material is strong enough that I think Mission: Yozakura Family will survive this bare-bones adaptation. I can't see the tides turning enough for the series to become must-watch television for anyone but die-hard fans, but if you still might want to check it out if you have some time to kill, and you're in the mood for something breezy and cute.
