The 2017 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards panel of judges announced its nominees for the best works in the comic book industry on Tuesday. Five manga titles are vying for the Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia award:
Sonny Liew's The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye is also nominated for the Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia award. The comic, originally published in Singapore, also received nominations for Best Graphic Album–New, Best Writer/Artist, Best Coloring, Best Lettering, and Best Publication Design. It received more nominations this year than any other title.
In addition, Viz Media's publication of Takeshi Obata's blanc et noir: Takeshi Obata illustrations art book received a nomination in the Best Comics-Related Book category.
Manga creator Rumiko Takahashi (Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma ½, Inuyasha, RIN-NE) has again been nominated for the Will Eisner Comic Awards Hall of Fame this year. She was also nominated last year but did not receive the award.
Voting is open to all comic book industry professionals until June 16. The results in all categories will be announced in a gala awards ceremony on the evening of Friday, July 21 at Comic-Con International in San Diego.
Drawn & Quarterly's release of Shigeru Mizuki's Showa 1953-1989: A History of Japan (Volume 4 of Showa: A History of Showa Japan) won the Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia category last year.
