I guess theres quite a lot of romcoms this season, but I wouldn't consider it an especially strong season for them. While fairly standard in its setup and arc, I'd say the strong execution makes A Star Brighter Than the Sun the only real standout.
As for Plus Sized-Misadventures in Love, I have to admit I don't really understand how its discussed as being body positive. Yes, the lead is fat and portrayed sympathetically. Nonetheless, the fact that considering herself attractive is ludicrous is about 50% of the shows comic material rather undermines this. I'm not saying this in itself wrecks the show or anything, more than I'm puzzled by its place in discourse. |

I haven't watched the show (or read the manga) yet so I'm only saying this off the preview and what I've seen others say online, but I think the reason it's being discussed is that even if there are jokes about how this girl thinking she's attractive is ludicrous, the character herself is not phased by them. Like yeah it can be seen as "lol this fat girl thinks she's hot", but as long as the girl in-universe likes who she is (well, likes who she is nowj, post amnesia) then I think it can be judged overall as positive. Not saying it's anime of the year and needs to be winning awards for representation or anything... In a way it reminds me of all those villainess stories where the hook is "everybody expects ladies to be all demure but this one acts extremely un-ladylike" *cue laugh track*. Granted those are much less severe since the quirks in those are sillier stuff like (for this season) "she likes monster meat" or "she punches not-so-nice-people in the face" and not problems we have to deal with in actual society, but, like, if the lady in question likes their particular quirk and isn't ashamed, then that's still a win in my book. A W is a W is a W. |

The thing is, I don't think theres any "can be seen" about this. Having watched the show, this is very directly the shows number 1 joke. Constantly. I mean its no problem for me if people read this as empowering but fundamentally I can only see this as just a subtler telling of fat jokes. Not in an alarmist sense, but I just don't know if most of the positive chat is from people who haven't seen it. Now, her still being positive about herself (and, you know, existing) is I suppose still far above average by anime standards. But comparing to gentler representation in, say, Witch from Mercury or March Comes in like a Lion its not particularly impressive. |

Lately I've been gravitating more towards workplace comedies rather than the usual ones with a school setting, and Plus-Sized Misadventures in Love, My Awkward Senpai and A Mangaka's Weirdly Wonderful Workplace have been scratching that itch nicely for me.
As for the high school ones, I'm enjoying A Star Brighter than the Sun, but I dropped Yano-kun's Ordinary Days after two episodes because I thought the way Yano kept getting injured was unfunny and over-the-top in a way that clashed terribly with the gentle tone the director was trying to set. |
