Goodbye Lara is 100% an isekai so I don't think there's any "sneaking" required to put that in. It should be proudly featured as the best one of the season so far. It's cannon that Lara died and has been resurrected. The universe she drops out of the sky into is one where magical, reincarnated mermaids drop out of skies, fish-witches can talk, and somewhere nearby a whole society of merpeople is kept in suspended animation inside some type of clamshell-cryo-pods. In other words: a fantasy world. That she's been reincarnated into. With her memories of past lives intact so she can try to do better this time around.

Yeah, I'd also count Goodbye, Lara as a reverse isekai series.
Concerning Heroine? Saint?, Luciana isn't the only character who shows some yuri inclination; Anna-Marie, the redhead introduced late in episode 2, has a more openly-stated interest in cute girls. (Though she also mentions that muscle-bound guys are her type, so she's bi, I guess?) And while it wouldn't be inaccurate to call the early stages of this series an isekai parody - and thus it doesn't engage in the deeper ruminations brought up as possibilities in the article - it does have some more interesting twists on the concept later on which should be at least hinted at before the end of the season. |

The titular Red River does exist, but you will have better luck finding it on an online map if you search for "Kızılırmak River" in Turkey (Republic of Türkiye).

Since they were both annoyed by the outfits in Overpowered and Rearguard, I'm surprised there was no mention of Exiled Knight's MC's evil cousin wearing a bra with underboob fangs/claws pointed toward her torso. I've seen loads of impractical battlewear on women in anime, but that one takes the prize.

For those not in the know, it is in the Samsun Province. There is another river in that province called Terme. In ancient times, it was called the Thermodon River. The Thermodon River was situated in the Themiscyra plain where the Amazons lived. |

I can understand lamenting that Red River isn’t as good as it ought to be, but between the sheer unlikeliness of the adaptation even existing, and all of the much worse animation I’ve suffered through over the years, I find it hard to complain. I mean, just look at the horses: they look like horses!
As for broadening the scope of isekai to discuss stuff like Goodbye, Lara, I get it, and I don’t exactly disagree, but I feel like there’s an important distinction to be made. Because it’s very specifically a fish out of temporal water (as is Red River, of course) which is one of my favorites. I suppose you could frame it as a sub-trope of Isekai, but I dunno. The whole “Isekai” appellation feels kinda toxic. Like it’s practically a derogatory term these days. It’s a framing that sort of implicitly says it’s “good for n Isekai, which is a low bar — Goodbye, Lara is just plain good. Basically, I don’t think we really need to go out of our way to apply the label to borderline shows. Anyway, y’all piqued my interest on Thunder, if I’m remembering the title correctly here. I don’t know that I have the energy to start from the beginning, but I would like to check out the episode where the cartoon girl gets Isekai’d. Anyone able and willing to point me at the specific episode that is? |
