Kaasan - Mom's Life Manga to End in June

Saibara will launch new work about "mother who has moved on" in October

The Mainichi Shimbun newspaper announced on Monday that Rieko Saibara's Mainichi Kāsan (Kaasan - Mom's Life) manga will end in the newspaper's June 26 issue, and the manga's 14th and final volume is slated for September. Saibara will launch a new manga in the newspaper in October.

When asked why she is ending the manga, Saibara answered that she had "graduated from being a mother" after raising her children. Her next manga will deal with the "second life of a mother who has moved on," and will also run in the newspaper weekly.

Mainichi Kāsan describes the humorous everyday experiences of Saibara's own life with her two children. The manga has been running in the newspaper's morning edition every week since 2002.

Mainichi Shimbun Shuppan published the manga's 13th compiled book volume last October. The manga and the author have received multiple awards, including the Japan Media Arts Festival Award in 2004, the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize short story award in 2005, and the Japan Cartoonist Association's President of the House of Councilors Award in 2011.

The manga also inspired a television anime in 2009. Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired in Japan. An English broadcast version aired in Japan in 2011. In the English version, titled Hello! Mainichi Kāsan, actors Kōsuke Yabe and Mau Konishi help viewers learn English.

The manga also inspired a 2011 live-action film.

Saibara's autobiographical essay Kono Yo de Ichiban Daiji na "Kane" no Hanashi also received a live-action television adaptation in 2010.
