Episode 1133 of One Piece is a series of triumphs tinged with bittersweet dramatic irony.

This week, the gulf between what we see on screen versus what we know will happen in the end creates a vast gulf of despair. Technically, just about everything that happens is positive. Kuma saves the day, Bonney is training, the Revolutionary Army is moving on, there is a cure for Bonney's condition, and Kuma will become a model for the future. Of course, we all know how this turns out: tragedy. Unending, terrible tragedy. But that's the cornerstone of what makes this flashback an effective emotional gut-punch. Despite everything we know, despite how it has to turn out… It's hard not to root for Kuma and Bonney in the moment. We can't help but wish things could be different and long for the world that might have been.

Ultimately, it cannot be. Kuma will become a model for a twisted line of destructive war machines that strike fear into the hearts of pirates and innocents alike. The very name Pacifista is more than simply a cruel joke; it is a twisting of Kuma's own words. He desired to protect and make the world a better place, to alleviate suffering wherever he could. Instead, he will become the baseline weapon serving the very system that has crushed him, his family, and his friends time and again.

At least the upside is that all of this is brilliantly brought to life and well-paced. There is something deeply cathartic about watching Kuma punch unjust overlords with such force that a palace explodes. There's also the fun and simple joys of the church bouncing like a cartoon character when Bonney realizes the changes she has undergone. Not to mention the hilarity of Vegapunk and Kuma encountering one another in person and each finding the other's physique odd.
