The Click
July 15th - 21st

by Brian Hanson,

Hello fair readers! I'm back from my hiatus and managing to pull myself away from my recently-acquired Guitar Hero addiction to bring you another full weeks' worth of everything and anything anime on that TV box you own. This is The Click, not to be confused with the recent Adam Sandler vehicle, “Click.” Although, I was assigned to do some freelance consulting work on the project; however by “freelance” I mean that I stood outside the multiplex and shouted incoherent, possibly blasphemous things at moviegoers as they made their exit.

The Pre-TV-Listings Discussion Point is thus: Kim Manning, head programmer and self-proclaimed anime guru under the omnipresence of Adult Swim, was recently named by Icv2 as number 3 in a list of the most influential figurehead in the North American anime industry. And to think, in the past few months I've been writing this thing I've called the Adult Swim anime ratings “lousy”! Although, even by Adult Swim's own admissions, they are rather lousy. TV ratings, however, are of concern to the network and the network alone – I doubt Geneon was terribly concerned with Samurai Champloo's rather middling ratings share. Disappointed, maybe, but considering how the title literally shot to the top of the DVD sales charts thanks to its Adult Swim presence, that feeling probably did not last long. Heck, take a look at Paranoia Agent; it's been shoved into a rather unfortunate late/early timeslot to die, essentially, and people are once again talking about the show, reminded of its existence thanks in no small part to the Cartoon Network.

As for this week's cabal of shows: eh. If you're an addled TV hound such as myself and desperately seeking out the newest of the new, prepare to be disappointed. However, if you don't mind re-watching some older stuff or seeking out things you've missed before at odd timeslots, it's great.  For example, here's a couple of interesting rerun gems out there this week:

Hellsing
(Encore Action)
-Tuesday July 18 12:00am - Episode 1 "The Undead" (Repeats Tue Jul 18 12:00pm)
-Tuesday July 18 12:30am - Episode 2 "Club M" (Repeats Tue Jul 18 12:30pm)
-Tuesday July 18 1:00am - Episode 3 "Sword Dancer" (Repeats Tue Jul 18 1:00pm)
-Wednesday July 19 12:00am - Episode 4 "Innocent As A Human" (Repeats Wed Jul 19 12:00pm)
-Wednesday July 19 12:30am - Episode 5 "Brotherhood" (Repeats Wed Jul 19 12:30pm)
-Wednesday July 19 1:00am - Episode 6 "Dead Zone" (Repeats Wed Jul 19 1:00pm)
-Thursday July 20 12:00am - Episode 7 "Duel" (Repeats Thu Jul 20 12:00pm)
-Thursday July 20 12:30am - Episode 8 "Kill House" (Repeats Thu Jul 20 12:30pm)
-Thursday July 20 1:00am - Episode 9 "Red Rose Vertigo" (Repeats Thu Jul 20 1:00pm)
-Friday July 21 12:00am - Episode 10 "Master of Monster" (Repeats Fri Jul 21 12:00pm)
-Friday July 21 12:30am - Episode 11 "Transcend Force" (Repeats Fri Jul 21 12:30pm)
-Friday July 21 1:00am - Episode 12 "Totally Destruction" (Repeats Fri Jul 21 1:00pm)
-Friday July 21 1:30am - Episode 13 "Hellfire" (Repeats Fri Jul 21 1:30pm)

Every. Single. Episode. Of. Hellsing. So if you're lying awake at night, drenched in sweat and anticipation for the upcoming Hellsing Ultimate, or perhaps you've managed to avoid every opportunity to see the series in full, here's your chance. If you have the Encore Action channel, anyway.

Meanwhile, Adult Swim's dug up two rather interesting titles to air in their five-in-the-morning “death slot”:

Super Milk-chan
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday July 16 5:00am - Episode 2 "From Giba-Chan to Dioxin"

Gigantor
(Cartoon Network)
-Tuesday July 18 5:30am - Episode 5 "Spider's Revenge"
-Wednesday July 19 5:30am - Episode 6 "The Secret Valley"
-Thursday July 20 5:30am - Episode 7 "The Diamond Smugglers"
-Friday July 21 5:30am - Episode 8 "Dr. Diamond"

Behold, the deadpan un-humor of Super Milk Chan (which, at the risk of sounding unpopular, I happen to love), as well as the cheeky retro fun of Shōtarō Ishinomori's mecha classic, Gigantor.

For those of you looking for something more, say, accessible, I think I can cover that for you:

Naruto
(Cartoon Network)
-Saturday July 15 7:00pm - Episode 36 "Clone vs. Clone: Mine Are Better Than Yours!"
-Saturday July 15 7:30pm - Episode 37 "Surviving the Cut! The Rookie Nine Together Again!"
-Saturday July 15 8:00pm - Episode 38 "Narrowing the Field: Sudden Death Elimination"
-Saturday July 15 8:30pm - Episode 39 "Bushy Brow's Jealousy: Barrage of Lions Unleashed"
-Saturday July 15 9:00pm - Episode 40 "Kakashi and Orochimaru: Face-to-Face"
-Saturday July 15 9:30pm - Episode 41 "Kunoichi Rumble: The Rivals Get Serious"
-Saturday July 15 10:00pm - Episode 42 "The Ultimate Battle: Cha!"
-Saturday July 15 10:30pm - Episode 43 "Killer Kunoichi and a Shaky Shikamaru"

Another Naruto marathon? What's the occasion? Aside from instant-mega-ratings, the goal is to goad Naruto's vast and varied fanbase to check out the Toonami programming block's latest online venture, Toonami Jetstream, which goes live that very same night. Alas, this means I am Bo-Bobo deprived this night, but a bunch of new-ish Naruto is good enough.

OTHER PREMIERES:

Case Closed
(YTV)
Saturday July 22 12:00am - Episode 16 "The Two-Faced Brother"

Conan investigating a murder? No way! Oh, but you'll get that this week, as our underage gumshoe looks into a mysterious disappearance, and two shady brothers with eerie ties to the victim.

Chrono Crusade
(Showtime Beyond)
Friday July 21 9:00pm - Episode 23 "The Noise"

In the most penultimate Chrono Crusade episode ever, Chrono and Rosette prepare for their final battle with Aion. I wonder if that'll lead to anything.

Eureka 7
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday July 16 12:00am - Episode 14 "Memory Band" (Repeats Sun Jul 16 3:00am)

The Gekkōstate, exhausted by their recent bout with the military, ponders the perennial perplexity that is Eureka. Such as, why does everyone pronounce her name as “Ehh-oo-REKK-uh”? To sound “more like the native Japanese”? When it's a Greek word? That's just silly.

Fullmetal Alchemist
(YTV)
Friday July 21 10:00pm - Episode 21 "The Red Glow" (Repeats Sat Jul 22 1:00am)

Ed and Al battle two oddly familiar guards in the shady remains of the rather hush-hush Laboratory 5. Later, Ed must make a difficult decision when he meets with a particular disgraced former State Alchemist. Any “Red Glow” probably means your “tint” setting is too high on your TV set.

Inuyasha
(Cartoon Network)
Wednesday July 19 12:30am - Episode 155 "The Demon Protector of the Sacred Jewel Shard" (Repeats Wed Jul 19 4:00am)

Whilst following the nefarious Naraku into the depths of the underworld, Inuyasha and his time-traveling buddies must face Hosenki, a former ally of Inuyasha's late father. For those not “in the know,” Inuyasha is rapidly approaching kinda-sorta being finished, so this and future episodes might be of interest to those curious how the story ends. Or doesn't.

(YTV)
Friday July 21 9:00pm - Episode 150 "The Mysterious Light That Guides the Saint" (Repeats Sat Jul 22 2:30am)

Our Canadian friends are catching up with Inuyasha as well, seeing as they are but a mere five episodes behind. In this one, the ambiguously evil Princess Abi attacks a group of defenseless villagers trapped in a cave, but begins to question Naraku's sincerity. Naraku must've left his wallet at home, along with his government-appointed “I AM A CARTOONISH VILLAIN, DO NOT TRUST ME” card.

Samurai 7
(Independent Film Channel)
Saturday July 15 10:30pm - Episode 16 "The Storm" (Repeats Sun Jul 16 1:30am, 10:00am, Thu Jul 20 11:30pm, Fri Jul 21 2:30am)

The remnants of the vicious Nobuseri begin to make another assault on the weary band of Samurai, whom make their seemingly last stand against impossible odds due to the loss of their ship. Because this show is in the future, make sure you understand that “ship” means “spaceship.” That's important. Because, the show is in the future.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
(YTV)
Saturday July 15 12:00pm - Episode 42 "Duel Monsters Spirit Day"

This episode sounds incredibly bizarre, so much so that I rarely believe it. Seeing as how I have no choice to, however: the denizens of the Yu-Gi-Oh! academy don costumes resembling their esteemed playing cards as part of a school festival. Then, they of course play the game upon which they are emulating. A sly metatextual realization on the nature of crass commercialism? Or perhaps just an excuse to draw the characters in goofy costumes? The judge of this question is you, dear viewer.

MOVIES/SPECIALS

Gundress
(Encore Action)
Saturday July 15 12:00am (Repeats Sat Jul 15 7:00pm, Mon Jul 17 12:00pm, Tue Jul 18 5:00am)

At last, an amusing but mediocre action movie on cable television! In The Future, Japan has established a new international port to spur global commerce, and guarding that port from terrorists and cyber-criminals are an elite force of butt-kickers known as the Angel Arms Company. Assassinations, jilted lovers, and conspiracies galore figure into this unfortunately complicated plot. But, there are explosions, and explosions are pretty cool.

Kai Doh Maru
(Encore Action)
Saturday July 15 9:00am (Repeats Mon Jul 17 6:00am)

This is a short, less-than-an-hour-long Production I.G film abou... oh, you've seen it already. Nevermind.

Up next, repeats galore! I'll be back next week with more televised fun! Hopefully.
