The Click
April 7th - April 13th

by Brian Hanson,

Welcome back, dear readers, to another cavalcade of bacchanalia known only as, "The Click." I'm Brian Hanson, your ever-vigilant guide through the murky depths of TV Land, pointing out along the way all those juicy and fresh anime on TV listings that most other mortal beings dare not mention. Keep in mind, though, that said juicy and fresh TV listings are tentative, and all times listed are Eastern. Although that is not to say that I don't care enough for you all to list them, however I have enough faith in your abilities to use, say, a calculator to adjust the times to your own specific timezone.

My comments last week literally exploded, due to an unforeseen yet totally within character April Fools Prank by Adult Swim - for those that missed it, they ran a marathon of their surrealist anime-inspired original series, Perfect Hair Forever, but with added VHS tracking and inaccurate subtitles, evoking the VHS fansub days of yore. Some, like myself, thought it was all in good fun, and the episodes of Bleach and Eureka 7 and whatnot that were skipped were scheduled for the following week, so it's not like they intentionally canceled anything; many of you, however, found it to be in poor taste and reflective of a strong, anti-anime stance the network has taken over the years. While I don't necessarily agree, I can see where everyone's coming from; I frequently chide the Adult Swim Powers-That-Be for failing to promote their shows, as well as sticking them in a futile late-night Saturday timeslot to begin with.

Allow me to, however, assure everyone that unless Adult Swim has any plans for an Easter Fools prank, I can safely say that Bleach and Eureka 7 and the rest should be played in their entirety, sans puerile snarkiness.

Maybe.

Memories
(Encore Action)
Saturday April 14 12:00am

If you happen to be what I would refer to as a "savvy" reader of my personal webspace, you've probably noted that I've never including things that air on the tricky Friday/Saturday night at midnight timeslot during the week prior. The reasoning behind this is twofold; one, I am a stickler for the rules, so if I'm only covering things that air between March sixth and March twelfth, then by Jove come midnight on March thirteenth, I refuse to acknowledge it. Two, I am very, irreparably lazy, and scrolling over one tiny iota on the TV charts to peek at what might be airing merely one minute past my cut-off date is simply not something I'm willing to sacrifice precious seconds to achieve. A third reason, if I might rescind my "twofold" comment, is that typically the shows and movies airing on Saturdays at midnight are ones that have either been replayed to molecular dissolution, or ones that I simply don't care much for. Memories, however, is neither.

For those uninitiated in the ways of superb Japanese animated cinema, Memories is a stellar anthology film comprising of three segments derived from wünderkind Katsuhiro Ōtomo's earlier one-shot Manga that he completed before starting work on Akira. The cast and crew represents some of the biggest names currently working in anime: The first segment includes such luminaries as Kōji Morimoto, Satoshi Kon, and Yoko Kanno; the second part features wonderful work by Studio Madhouse; and the third is a literal masterstroke of design and direction by Otomo himself. Old-timey anime nerds like myself have fond memories of Memories back in the fansub VHS days; due to an exorbitant licensing cost, the film, which was completed in late 1995, sat alone and unloved by US distributors until a mere three years ago when it was purchased and unceremoniously dumped on DVD, with nary a trace of hype.

I'm a little puzzled by its inclusion on the Encore "Action" channel; this film is quite, at the risk of sounding elitist, avant-garde. To put it simply, this is the best 114 minutes of anime airing on TV probably this month, and although I'll freely admit to enjoying the Bleaches and Narutoes of the world, it's thrilling to see something with actual substance to write about for a change.

PREMIERES:

Basilisk
(Independent Film Channel)
Friday April 13 11:30pm - Episode 15 "Reckoning" (Repeats Sat Apr 14 5:00am)

It's the original Odd Couple on this week's Basilisk! Only with more ninjas, and bloodletting. Two enemies are trapped, and must work together or perish.

BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad
(MuchMusic)
-Sunday April 8 12:00pm - Episode 9 "The Night Before LIVE" (Repeats Sun Apr 8 5:00pm, Mon Apr 9 12:00am, Tue Apr 10 7:00pm, Wed Apr 11 12:00am, 4:00pm, Fri Apr 13 8:00pm)
-Sunday April 8 12:30pm - Episode 10 "FACE" (Repeats Sun Apr 8 5:30pm, Mon Apr 9 12:30am, Tue Apr 10 7:30pm, Wed Apr 11 12:30am, 4:30pm, Fri Apr 13 8:30pm)

This week on quite possibly the only Japanese animated school-age music-and-character-based drama program currently airing in North America, the plucky Koyuki unwittingly enters the school swimming tournament while his band slowly drifts apart, just in time for their first big live gig! I know words like "gig" because I'm hip.

Bleach
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday April 8 12:00am - Episode 28 (Repeats Sun Apr 8 3:00am)

See? Bleach Episode 28 wasn't obliterated by Adult Swim's little VHS fansub Perfect Hair Forever prank. It's here, and it involves Ganju and Orihime doing their best to ward off their own respective and relentless pursuers.

Blood+
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday April 8 12:30am - Episode 4 "Dangerous Boy" (Repeats Sun Apr 8 3:30am)

It seems like only seven days ago, I was featuring this episode of Blood+, thinking that perhaps, perhaps, I might be doing so again due to any April Fools shenanigans on behalf of the Adult Swim network. I remember saying something like, "Saya, the much put-upon unwitting warrior against the Vampire-ish “Chiropteran” menace, must stop one of her beleaguered friends from taking matters into his own hands. You know how those 'matters of life and death' are." Crazy.

Cowboy Bebop
(Razer)
Sunday April 8 9:00pm - Episode 16 "Black Dog Serenade"

One of the many great things Bebop does that certain other anime directors should take notice of, is how effectively it handles backstory and flashbacks. It doesn't halt the action dead in its tracks to pad out a good fifteen minutes' worth of running time, nor does it pedantically spell out every motive for the character in excruciating detail. Watch and learn, as the show delves into the past of Jet Black, as a chance encounter with a stray prison ship pits the gruff ex-cop against both an old friend and an old enemy.

Elemental Gelade
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday April 10 5:00pm - Episode 11 "The Class Fighter of Revenge" (Repeats Tue Apr 10 8:00pm, Wed Apr 11 12:30am, 12:00pm)

Cou and Ren, the heroes of this simple-minded action series, encounter a vengeful and nasty adversary and subdue him using violence while the irony of the entire situation flies overhead.

Eureka 7
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday April 8 1:00am - Episode 47 "Acperience 4" (Repeats Sun Apr 8 4:00am)

Five episodes left until Eureka 7's grand finale, which of course means that the barrier to entry for this series has long since been past, and new fans are advised to pick up the DVDs unless you're some crazy-pants that enjoys watching exposition and conclusions by characters that are unfamiliar. So basically, if words like The Command Cluster and the Coralion are foreign to you, by all means stay away.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday April 10 6:30pm - Episode 11 "Engagement, Broken" (Repeats Tue Apr 10 9:30pm, Wed Apr 11 2:00am, 1:30pm)

At least with Eureka 7, one might be able to piece together a few things on their own if they happened to catch the series midway through; the barrier to entry on Gankutsuou is passed merely ten minutes in. Have I mentioned before how this show is dripping with plot? Part of this week's drip includes Maxemilion and Franz in a high-speed car chase, poisonings, and lots of other things that are covered in more depth in The Count of Monte Cristo Cliffs Notes.

Gundam Seed Destiny
(YTV)
Friday April 13 9:30pm - Episode 6 "The World's Final Hour" (Repeats Sat Apr 14 1:30am)

The wayward space colony Junius 7 continues on its collision course with the Earth, leading the good guys, including two good guys who hate each other but must learn to put their differences aside, to attempt to destroy it while the bad guys wish to thwart this attempt. Being that they are bad guys, they would rather see the Earth devastated.

Hikaru no Go
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Saturday April 7 5:00am - Episode 7 "I'm Not Going to Play You!"
-Monday April 9 8:30am - Episode 8 "Rainy Day Strategy" (Repeats Tue Apr 10 5:00am)
-Wednesday April 11 5:00am - Episode 9 "An Irritating Presence"
-Wednesday April 11 8:30am - Episode 10 "The Third Member" (Repeats Thu Apr 12 5:00am)
-Thursday April 12 8:30am - Episode 11 "The Most Inconsiderate Act" (Repeats Fri Apr 13 5:00am)
-Friday April 13 8:30am - Episode 12 "You Are the Third Board" (Repeats Sat Apr 14 5:00am)

Who'da thunk that a centuries old board game played on a grid with monochrome stones would make an interesting scenario for an animated series? Or maybe it doesn't, if you're one of those people who find the idea of an entire series devoted to characters kneeling respectfully in front of another and laying down stones not particularly interesting. This week sees the plucky young Hikaru dominating his middle school Go club chums, much to their chagrin, which leads to no end of plotting and ideas to knock the upstart down a peg.

Idaten Jump
(Cartoon Network)
-Thursday April 12 6:00am - Episode 17 "Darkness
-Friday April 13 6:00am - Episode 18 "Race"

No doubt the creators of Idaten Jump had the best of intentions; kids ride bikes, so why would they not enjoy a series involving bicycle racing? Unfortunately, Idaten Jump's lack of success does not bode well for my own plans for Hopscotch Master X, and Swingset Champion Team GO!.

King of Bandit Jing
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Monday April 9 9:30am - Episode 5 "The Little Girl From the Technicolor Town" (Repeats Tue Apr 10 5:30am)
-Tuesday April 10 9:30am - Episode 6 "The Eternal City of Revaiva, Part 1" (Repeats Wed Apr 11 5:30am)
-Wednesday April 11 9:30am - Episode 7 "The Eternal City of Revaiva, Part 2" (Repeats Thu Apr 12 5:30am)
-Thursday April 12 9:30am - Episode 8 "Don't Drop the Por Vora" (Repeats Fri Apr 13 5:30am)
-Friday April 13 9:30am - Episode 9 "The Musical Island of Coco-Oco" (Repeats Sat Apr 14 5:30am)

King of Bandit Jing is a show that is seriously better than it has any right to be, thanks in large part to the show's lively art direction and snazzy animation. Contrary to the examples led by many other dull, lifeless shonen-action shows, you can redeem a blase concept with imaginative and creative animation. The premise? Jing, the King of Bandits, goes on adventures in various towns, each one more visually distinctive than the last, while putting up with his talkative bird sidekick and such.

Kyoh Kara Maoh
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday April 10 5:30pm - Episode 11 "Across the Dimensions, a War Begins" (Repeats Tue Apr 10 8:30pm, Wed Apr 11 1:00am, 12:30pm)

The usual shonen-ai-infused shenanigans take a backseat on this week's Kyoh Kara Maoh, as our put-upon bishonen protagonist finds himself in the compromising position of diffusing a potential civil war.

The Law of Ueki
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday April 10 6:00pm - Episode 11 "The Law of Robert's Ten" (Repeats Tue Apr 10 9:00pm, Wed Apr 11 1:30am, 1:00pm)

Oh, I get it. Clever. Every episode begins with "The Law of (blank)," because the title of the show is named "The Law of Ueki!" It probably took a team of scientists and paleolithic-era wizards untold eons come up with that. Anyway, The Law of Robert's Ten concerns Ueki's battle against the Kuro Kage, which is interrupted somewhat when the more powerful Shiro Kage arrives in his stead.

Naruto
(Cartoon Network)
-Saturday April 7 10:00pm - Episode 81 "Return of the Morning Mist"
-Saturday April 7 10:30pm - Episode 82 "Eye to Eye: Sharingan vs. Sharingan!"

Nothing screams "we are very, very desperate for high ratings this week" on the Cartoon Network's behalf than random marathons of their biggest shows. Thankfully, Naruto happens to be one of them; unfortunately, Bo-Bobo is not, so I must suffer yet another indignant week without it. Naruto fans, meanwhile, are in for a treat, as the elusive Itachi finally makes his appearance.

(YTV)
Friday April 13 8:00pm - Episode 76 "An Assassin of the Moonlit Night"

Remember earlier, when I mentioned how Cowboy Bebop had perfected the usage of flashbacks without devoting entire episodes (or two) to them? Yeah. This week, Gaara takes a trip down memory lane to indoctrinate viewers on his horrible childhood as a misunderstood outcast.

Samurai Champloo
(Razer)
Sunday April 8 9:30pm - Episode 16 "Lullabies of the Lost, Verse 1"

Our favorite intrepid samurai wanderers have one of their little spats again, and decide to go their separate ways; all seems well until, of course, familiar and dangerous faces make their presence known.

Trigun
(G4TechTV Canada)
-Monday April 9 8:30pm - Episode 7 "B.D.N."
-Tuesday April 10 8:30pm - Episode 8 "And Between the Wasteland and the Sky"
-Wednesday April 11 8:30pm - Episode 9 "Murder Machine"
-Thursday April 12 8:30pm - Episode 10 "Quick Draw"
-Friday April 13 8:30pm - Episode 11 "Escape From Pain"

Ah yes, Trigun. That show. The one series for which I can excuse its frequent preachy-ness and lapses into godawful animation, because Vash the Stampede is simply that awesome. Canadian viewers will for the first time ever be treated to Vash's exploits in confronting the Bad Lads on a runaway sand steamer, misadventures on a caravan, and a chance encounter with the chain smoking, profiteering priest, Wolfwood.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday April 7 7:30pm - Episode 105 "Third Time's a Charm"

This spring, you will believe that Yu-Gi-Oh! GX will be renewed for a third season. On the precipice of this grand achievement, the humble, card-duelin' former phenomenon takes a moment to reflect on all the card battles before it. A clip show, in other words.

Zatch Bell
(YTV)
Friday April 13 8:30pm - Episode 64 "The Fierce Attack of Dalmos! Battle on the Top of the Sand"

Tired and worn out after their previous victory against the aptly-named Victoream, Zatch and Kiyo are again thrust into the cruel world of Mamodo battling thanks to the vicious Dalmos. Bathos, Ethos, and Pathos are three things you won't find in Zatch Bell; doe-eyed cartoon moppets hitting each other, though, you definitely will.

None of these features, including Otomo's own Steamboy, are as good as Memories. Thus, I feel like I am merely wasting my and your precious time by describing them. So I won't. I'll just indignantly huff about how beneath me they are and my elitist ways.

So I guess that concludes The Click for this fine week! Check back in seven days time for more possible televised fun, and check below for tons of repeats, including the wonderful return of Shin-chan! Bye everyone!
