Episode 9 of From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman serves as a solid weekly entry that introduces new concepts and character expressions we haven't seen before.
The big adventure this week centers on Beryl and Surena heading off to capture a horse. This setup involved new elements we haven't quite seen yet. First of all, it's not just another slay the monster or rout the villain's style of conflict. It's a non-violent adventure where they are barred from harming the target and encouraged to bring the horse back in the best condition, as it will be a gift. This challenges our heroes to think creatively and use tools or skills we haven't seen before, such as Surena's towel-wrapped-arrowhead idea. It also hinges on problem-solving that does not require Beryl's swordsmanship, which helps make him feel like a more complex character and adds variety for the audience.
The sub-plot centers on Mewi needing a bag for school and Beryl trying to buy it. This is another fun addition to the series, as Beryl going shopping provides a few good chuckles and careful thought on his part. It's nice to see him settle into the parental role. While I wouldn't say it had a lot of twists and turns, I was pleasantly surprised in the process of him finding the right bag. The fact that she also went and bought something for him was a sweet character moment, too. It's nice to see them finding ways to take care of each other and grow closer while navigating this novel parent/child dynamic.
Character development episodes are a nice break from the high-stakes battles or constant political posturing that goes on with the guild, church, etc. I hope we get to see more entries like this in the future.
