I think it they're aiming to be taken seriously, it is too late to be fixed. They would have to rebrand the entire thing to start fresh. For all the issues The Game Awards have, they're taken more seriously than the Anime Awards.

They'd pretty much need a complete overhaul, because nobody should be taking an awards show that includes a "Must Protect At All Costs Character" category seriously

I agree with the others that Crunchyroll’s awards show is in dire need of an overhaul. It’s nothing more than a popularity contest as it is now and it only accounts for less than 10% of the total anime released in a year. It’s truly mind boggling how anyone can think it is good as it is now.

They used to have the more straightforward Best Boy and Best Girl categories but got rid of them in favor of that one. I'm not sure why exactly... to be more politically correct, I guess? It let's them sidestep any drama that would arise if they put a character in the "wrong" category. That might also be why they don't split Best VA into gendered categories either despite other awards shows splitting them into Best Actor and Best Actress categories. I think the awards are harmless as they are now. I get some people don't like the popularity contest aspect of them but I feel that's more favorable than a group of judges getting to decide everything and a show only wins because it's one judge's favorite so it gets to win. And given the way some of the judges have acted in the past it's probably best that isn't the case and the judging panel became a lot more divers these days than it was in the past. |

TGA is literally just an advertisement block, I can't imagine anyone taking doritopope's farce awards seriously when they won't even treat the awards given consistently year to year, stuffing best of categories inbetween sizzle reels and forcing industry veterans to make it snappy unless they're taking goty. I don't think people take CR's awards as seriously only because it isn't pushed as one of the only facets for anime announcements |

People will meme on TGA for the ads, non-industry celebrities, and "wrap it up", but stuff like a controversy over who made it onto the short-list of nominees for a category only happens when people feel invested in the outcome.
For better or worse, TGA has positioned itself as an award of note within the gaming space. I've already seen people debating what categories, for instance, Expedition 33 is likely to win at the next TGA and if any anticipated releases this year might challenge the prediction. I never see that kind of talk around the Anime Awards. |

There's a difference between the awards as a show vs. the awards as "recognition" or whatever you want to call it. The TGA as a show is one big advert run, sure, but as recognition it mostly does well and has certain legitimacy (the shoving of certain categories in between announcement is a problem with the tension between the show part and the award part for example). Crunchyroll has the opposite problem. The show is fine, I don't think most people have problems with that, but the recognition part is cooked by being, by a large margin, a popularity contest with no account on quality. As much as I find Metallic Rouge an endearing disaster, it had no place in "best original", and you can pretty much call best anime 1 year in advance depending on whether or not a new AoT or Demon Slayer season is coming up. |

We need to stop including anime that hasn't been completed yet, especially for Anime of the Year.
If you're going to do long runners, include all of them (One Piece, Detective Conan, Precure maybe?) or don't include them at all. Also I want a write in option. |

Exactly. It's like what the other poster mentioned - People genuinely care about awards earned at TGA (businesses too). Most people do not genuinely care about awards earned at TAA. Most complaints about TGA are about the show (random celebrities and the awards not being the focus over the trailers), not the awards. |

I personally think the Anime Awards could be fixed if Crunchyroll actually wanted to fix it.
In another article about the winning titles of 2025 Anime Awards, I already stated my criticism on this award show. Here are my main critic points: - The nominations are about 90% titles that have aired on Crunchyroll. - In the main categories, there was only one title which won Anime of the Year award not being aired on CR. It was Cyberpunk Edgerunners. - I really would like to know how the nomination process works. Are there titles for recognation which did not aired on Crunchyroll? - Getting rid of the Best Fantasy Anime category while implementing a Best Isekai Anime award did not make any sense to me. - Several other genres such as Sci-Fi/Supernatural, Horror, Music were completely ignored so none of these titles received a nod. - Awards for Best Character Design and Best Background Art only names the titles and maybe the studios but not the people who have been mainly responsible for these things. - I needed to cast my vote in EVERY category in order to successfully vote for the CAA's otherwise I would not have been able to vote at all, which means I was forced to vote in all categories despite having categories where I did not care who would win in the end. - Voting for seven days in a row is insane and it kind of falsifies the results in the end. What could be changed? - Introducing a nomination method like the Anime Trending Awards (ATAs), where the nominations are based on a ranking system (this may help to generate more diversity in the nominations especially in the main categories) - Titles that have been nominated and won Anime of the Year award should be excluded for future awards (instead they should be nominated in Best Ongoing Series) - Create more genre-related categories - Introduce a Jury Prize and Public Prize in each category (like the Japan Expo Awards had in the past) - Voters should be able to vote ONCE in the voting period and not once a day as long as the voting period goes - Voters should NOT be forced to cast a vote in each category in order to cast their vote successfully - Split Character categories into male/female (the same goes for Best Voice Acting Performance categories) - Categories like Best Character Design, Best Background Art etc should honor the people in charge instead of the studios - The CAA's once had a Best Manga category (it would be nice if this category would be revived in the future) These would be my suggestions to fix the Anime Awards. |

I've never really cared for awards of any kind, but Crunchy's awards just take the cake for a complete and utter popularity contest. This does not make me want to watch Solo Leveling any more than I initially did. It's a low priority for me and that has not changed, if not even lowered further.

Ninja Kamuy getting a nomination and then winning will never not be funny.
The biggest problem is recency bias, which can somewhat be dealt with if the awards show happened in January and was for the entirely of the previous year. |
