The 29th annual Fantasia International Film Festival announced its second wave of titles on Thursday. The event will screen the world premiere of Tamala 2030: A Punk Cat in Dark, a follow-up feature film to the Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space anime film. Writer, composer, and director duo K. and kuno (known together as t.o.L) are returning to the film.

The festival describes the film:

With TAMALA 2030: A PUNK CAT IN DARK, the mysterious Japanese writer/composer/director duo K. and kuno, known together as t.o.L (“trees of Life”), have resumed, recalibrated, and resolved their tale of the cutest girl-cat in dystopian Cat Tokyo, surpassing themselves in their control of the cryptic, complex, and cuddly chaos they've unleashed. The kawaii paradigm of Hello Kitty and Hatsune Miku collides with cabalistic capitalism, cataclysmic prophecy, and the ruptured realities of Lynch, Pynchon, and Philip K. Dick in a deviously dreamlike, metaphysical mind-melt of high-fructose, retro-futuristic, paranoid pop-art brilliance

Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space originally released in Japan in 2002, and had not previously had an English release until California-based distribution company Deaf Crocodile released the film on home video last October. t.o.L directed the film, wrote the screenplay, and designed the characters. Kentaro Nemoto also designed the characters and handled 2D animation.

The festival will also screen the world premiere of episodes of Takashi Miike's Nyaight of the Living Cat anime. The event will also screen the Canadian premieres of Miike's Blazing Fists and Sham live-action films. Nyaight of the Living Cat will premiere in Japan in July.

Additionally, the event will screen the North American premiere of the live-action film of Akiko Higashimura's semi-autobiographical manga Blank Canvas: My So-Called Artist’s Journey (Kakukaku Shikajika). The film opened in Japan on May 16.

Previously announced works that will screen at the festival include the North American premiere of the live-action Ya Boy Kongming! the Movie film, the North American premiere of the live-action Honeko Akabane's Bodyguards film, and the North American premiere of Studio 4°C's new anime feature film ChaO.

The 29th Fantasia International Film Festival will be held from July 16 through August 3 in Montreal.

The Fantasia International Film Festival's Audience Awards is determined by popular vote from those who attended the film festival. Ghost Cat Anzu won gold, and the Mononoke The Movie: Phantom in the Rain anime film won bronze for the Best Animated Feature category in 2024.

Shigeyoshi Tsukahara and Twiflo's original anime project Kurayukaba full-length film won gold, The Concierge anime film won silver, and The First Slam Dunk anime film won bronze in 2023 in the Best Animated Feature category.

The film festival presents the Axis: Satoshi Kon Award for Excellence in Animation, which recognizes excellence in animation in the animated feature category. The First Slam Dunk anime film won the award in 2023.
