The Japanese publisher Shueisha is launching a new novel series for elementary and middle school children called Mirai Bunko on March 1, and manga creator Chica Umino (Honey and Clover, March comes in like a lion) is illustrating the cover for a new translation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables novel. Shueisha emphasizes that children can now read novels of their favorite anime and manga such as Chibi Maruko-chan and One Piece in this imprint, but the imprint will also have original stories from popular authors in fantasy, mystery, and other genres.
Yuriko Kimura is responsible for the new translation of Anne of Green Gables, and Tomoe Ono is illustrating the interior pages. Kimura had previously translated Montgomery's The Story Girl novel, Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales, Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking books. Umino illustrated a 2004 reprint of Motoko Arai's Tobira o Akete novel and created the original character designs for the Eden of the East anime. Umino also drew three pieces of wallpaper art that Shueisha posted online.
There will be 10 books in Mirai Bunko's launch lineup. Besides Anne of Green Gables, Shueisha is publishing novels of the following:
- Chibi Maruko-chan
- Okashi Kōjō no Himitsu!! (The Secret of the Candy Factory!!)
- One Piece (Loguetown Arc)
- Densha de Ikō! (Let's Go by Train!)
- Kimi ni Todoke
- Hatsukoi Neko (First-Love Cat)
- Yūrei Bus Tour (Ghost Bus Tour)
- Yasashii Akuma (Kind Devil)
- Prism Hearts
