McDonald's Commercials Go Nostalgic With Maison Ikkoku, Macross, Orange Road

Relive iconic romance & dining scenes from 1980s anime

McDonald's Japan previewed a new set of commercials for its Big Mac “Let's smile tomorrow, then and now” campaign on Friday. The commercials feature iconic scenes from 1980s anime Maison Ikkoku, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?, and Kimagure Orange Road. The commercials also revive Japan's 1980s Coca-Cola jingle “I feel Coke” by Daisuke Inoue. The commercials (in 30-, 60-, and 90-second lengths) will start airing throughout Japan on July 1, and they are already available on the McDonald's Japan YouTube channel (but not viewable outside of Japan).

In a comment to Japanese outlet Comic Natalie, Maison Ikkoku creator Rumiko Takahashi said, “I'm honored to take part in a McDonald's commercial!” Macross franchise co-creator and director Shōji Kawamori also commented, “Frankly, I am very happy and grateful [McDonald's] chose the Do You Remember Love? movie among the many memorable TV and OVA anime from the '80s. I'm glad I drew a scene of Minmay and the others eating hamburgers.”
