80 Sanrio Characters Vie for Supremacy in the 2019 Grand Prix

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

It's that time again. Time for Sanrio to unleash its multitude of mascots on to the world in a dramatic competition to win the hearts and minds of the masses. On one side, there's the face of the brand itself --Hello Kitty. The mascot that is maybe a cat, maybe a girl, and sometimes a giant robot pilot. Her primary opponents are Cinnamon, an adorable dog that survived online bullying to take the lead and Pom Pom Purin, a dog that might also be pudding.

Will one of the frequent top three contenders claim the title or will a dark horse over take the race? Is it possible that Gudetama will finally get off his lazy yolk and roll into the winner's seat?

This year's voting opened on Wednesday and will run until May 27. Sanrio's roster has grown to more than 450 characters but only 80 are in the running. Like previous years, there's a secondary collaboration poll where participants can vote on character collaborations with local governments and companies.

Last year's winner was Cinnamon, the dog's second time in the top spot followed by Pom Pom Purin and the X Japan stand-in mascot Yoshikitty! Hello Kitty herself came in fourth followed by My Melody, Pochacco, Little Twin Stars, Gudetama, SHOW BY ROCK!!, and Kuromi.

Sanrio will announce the interim results on May 9 followed by the final results on June 4 at the Sanrio Puroland theme park.
