Shochiku announced on Friday that director Tomio Kuriyama died on Wednesday of malignant lymphoma. He was 84.
Kuriyama was born in Tokyo on February 20, 1941. He joined Shochiku in 1965, and made his directorial debut as the assistant director for the Itoshi no Lahaina film.
Kuriyama directed the first 11 films in the Tsuri Baka Nisshi live-action film series based on Juzo Yamasaki and Kenichi Kitami's manga of the same name. The manga has spawned 22 live action films, the last of which opened in Japan in 2009.
Toshiyuki Nishida, who played the protagonist Hama-chan in the film series, died last October at 76 years old.
Kuriyama more recently directed the 2000 film Home Sweet Home and its 2003 sequel, as well as the 2014 film Fūkemon.
