Dark Horse Comics to release Akira

posted on

This December Dark Horse Comics, in association with Kodansha Ltd. and Studio Proteus, will begin releasing Katsuhiro Ōtomo's stunning science-fiction masterpiece, Akira.

Dark Horse will be releasing Akira in it's original format of 6 350+ page black and white graphic novels. Akira was originally released in English comic book format by Marvel Comics in the 80s, Dark Horse will be using Marvel's translation, however the sound effects will come from a different, europeen translation. Marvel had added color to it's version, however the Dark Horse release will be in black and white, same as the original Japanese Version. The Dark Horse version will also be released in the original graphic novel format. The six 350+ page (6-3/4" x 9-3/4") volumes are so large that many fans refered to them as "phone books". This is the first English language release of Akira in this format.

The first 364 page volume is expected to be released of December 13th at a suggested retail price of $24.95.

Akira is set in the post-apocalypse Neo-Tokyo of 2019, a vast metropolis built on the ashes of a Tokyo annihilated by an apocalyptic blast of unknown power that triggered World War III. The lives of two streetwise teenage friends, Tetsuo and Kaneda, change forever when dormant paranormal abilities begin to waken in Tetsuo, who becomes a target for a shadowy government operation, a group who will stop at nothing to prevent another catastrophe like that which leveled Tokyo. And at the core of their motivation is a raw, all-consuming fear: a fear of someone -- or something -- of unthinkably monstrous power known only as...Akira. And Akira is about to rise!

This is old news, but ANN somehow missed it first time around--- oops!
