Amazon Japan DVD Ranking, December 2007—May 2008

posted on by Egan Loo

The Internet retailer Amazon Japan has announced its top-selling DVDs for the six months between December of 2007 and May of 2008. Topping the list was Evangelion: 1.0 You Are [Not] Alone Special Equipment Edition. The regular edition of the first film based on Kinoko Nasu's Kara no Kyōkai - the Garden of sinners novels followed next at #2. The live-action Nodame Cantabile in Europe television special based on Tomoko Ninomiya's Nodame Cantabile manga filled the #10 slot.

The first of Khara's four movie remakes of Gainax's Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise was seen by 2 million theater attendees in Japan, and its Special Equipment Edition sold 219,000 DVDs in its first week of release. The Special Equipment Edition came with an extras disc, commentary, a documentary, the dialogue recording script, promotional videos, and a bonus bookmark made from five frames of actual film stock. The randomly distributed film bookmarks that happened to contain popular scenes have fetched auction prices of 200,000 yen (about US$2,000) or more.
