RahXephon's Hajime Jinguji draws story about boys in Japan's 1st naval school

Akinori Endo — an anime scriptwriter best known for Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and Five Star Stories — and artist Hajime Jinguji will launch a new historical manga called Bakumatsu Medaka-Gumi (Bakumatsu-Era Killifish Class) in the June issue of Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Magazine on May 2. The story takes place at the real-life Kobe Kaigun Sōrenjo (Kobe Naval Training Facility) at the end of the shoguns' rule over Japan during the middle of the 19th century. Many of Japan's aspiring youths are gathered under one roof with one common ambition: protecting their country, even as that country undergoes societal upheaval and struggles over its national identity.

The announcement of the manga's premiere was made on April 6 in Monthly Shonen Magazine's May issue. Endo and Jinguji have been developing this project for two years, and they will start the story with a 106-page debut chapter. Before drawing this manga, Jinguji was involved in the production of the RahXephon, Scrapped Princess, and Lord of Lords Ryu Knight television anime series.
