11-Meter Sculpture of Osamu Tezuka's Phoenix Unveiled (Updated)

posted on by Egan Loo

The MBS television station has posted a video report from the Tuesday unveiling of the 11-meter-wide (about 36-feet-wide) sculpture of Osamu Tezuka's manga character Phoenix (Hi no Tori) at the Kyoto International Manga Museum. The Phoenix character is a spiritual creature who has crossed paths with the entire history of human civilization through countless reincarnations. Famed busshi (traditional Buddhist sculptor) Mitsuaki Sutō had been carving the 4.5-meter-tall (15-feet-tall) statue out of red pine since the end of last year. The statue is decorated with laquered gold foil.

Update: MBS no longer hosts its video report, but 47News, Sankei Shimbun, Kyoto Shimbun, Yomiuri Shimbun, and Mainichi Shimbun (link 2) have posted photographs. Thanks, Dargonxtc.
