IG Port to establish Signal.MD for digital animation, apps, animation for kids

IG Port, the parent company of Production I.G, Xebec, Mag Garden, and Wit Studio, announced on Friday that it is establishing a new animation production subsidiary in October. The new company, with the planned name of Signal MD, will develop technology for full digital animation and smart devices. It will also build the foundation for the production of animation aimed at children and families.

The wholly owned subsidiary of IG Port will have 30 million yen (about US$280,000) in capital. Katsuji Morishita, a current board director and planning head of Production I.G, will serve as the president of Signal MD. Morishita has also served as a producer of many Production I.G works, including Blood-C and Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror.

Established CG studios in Japan include Shirogumi, Polygon Pictures, and OLM Digital. Other more recent entries include Marza Animation Planet, Sanzigen, Orange, and Graphinica, while veteran anime studios such as Toei Animation and Sunrise have also delved into CG. Some examples of CG anime works in Japan include 2011's Friends: Mononoke Shima no Naki and this year's hit Stand By Me Doraemon.
