Cast learns cheerleading from alumni of group that inspired the novel

The staff of the live-action film adaptation of Ryō Asai's Cheer Danshi!! (Cheer Boys!!) novel unveiled more five more cast members on Saturday. In addition, Bandai Namco Arts began streaming a making-of video showing the cast learning under the guidance of alumni from the mens' cheerleading team Shockers, which inspired the original novel.

The image above shows previously announced cast members Ryūsei Yokohama as Haruki Bandō and Masaki Nakao as Kazuma Hashimoto in the top row. The newly announced cast members, from left to right in the bottom row, include:

  • Toshiki Seto as Sho
  • Shōgo Iwaya as Gen
  • Ken Sugawara as Ichiro
  • Daichi Kodaira as Ton
  • Kōdai Asaka as Mizoguchi

27-year-old director Hiroki Kazama (After the Rain and Teiichi no Kuni spinoff mini-series) is directing the film.

The film is slated to open in early 2019 in Japan. Filming begins this month.

The original youth novel revolves around the "slightly odd and cute" members of a cheerleading squad at a men's university, and is loosely based on the real-life men's cheerleading team "Shockers." Shueisha published the novel in 2013, and it has more than 170,000 copies in print.

Kenichi Kondō launched a manga adaptation in April 2016, an anime adaptation (pictured right) premiered in July 2016, and a stage play premiered in December 2016. Funimation streamed the anime with English subtitles as it aired in Japan, and later released the series on home video.
