Bibi & Miyu and The Fox & Little Tanuki Announces as Combined Silver Title for FCBD 2020

Combined Children's Manga Titles For All Ages Readers Available At Participating Independent Comic Book Retailers

Los Angeles, CA — With the reveal of Free Comic Book Day 2020's full title lineup, TOKYOPOP®, a POP Media Holdings company and global manga leader, is excited to announce BIBI & MIYU and THE FOX & LITTLE TANUKI as one of the silver titles selected for the annual event. Presenting a combined comic with a preview of the two new manga, TOKYOPOP knows the importance of having all age friendly titles at the annual event.

“Once again, we're thrilled to be a part of such a huge event for comic and manga fans,” said Kae Winters, TOKYOPOP's marketing associate. “There are so many amazing free titles up for offer, and it's a great opportunity for fans to support their local comic shops.”

Bibi & Miyu's first volume is scheduled for release on July 7th 2020, and volume one of The Fox & Little Tanuki will be available for purchase on March 17th 2020.

More about the individual titles below.

BIBI & MIYU, by Hirara Natsume and Olivia Vieweg

BIBI & MIYU (Hirara Natsume, Olivia Vieweg) is a manga adaptation of the beloved German series Bibi Blocksberg, which follows the adventures of a young magical girl of the same name. Originally released as an audio series in the 1980s, it became a cultural touchstone for several generations of children and Bibi is still recognized as the most beloved children's character in Germany. This manga is a special cross-cultural project, where two magical girls from two entirely different continents and cultures come together to learn about one another.

When a new student from Japan shows up at Bibi Blocksberg's school, she fits in immediately. But Bibi's suspicious; she knows Miyu's hiding something, and she's determined to find out what! Bibi's journey takes her all the way to Japan, and while learning about all the new rules and magic in this foreign land, she realizes that maybe she and Miyu can be friends after all!

"Bibi & Miyu is all about Girl Power, with two smart and outgoing young magical teens exploring the world around them with unbridled curiosity," said Janae Young, editor. "This is the kind of story that reminds me what it was like to be a little girl."

THE FOX & LITTLE TANUKI, by Mi Tagawa

The second title to be previewed in the comic is The Fox & Little Tanuki (Mi Tagawa), an animal filled journey into Japanese folklore. In this fantastical setting, the gods appoint certain animals to be trained as apprentices to assist them in resolving human dilemmas, bestowing on them special powers. Fans will instantly be captivated by the adorable artwork and cuteness of Japan's native animal species, and the fascinating glimpse into ancient fantasy storytelling.

After 300 years, the gods that imprisoned Senzou the Fox Spirit for his arrogance finally set him free. There is only one condition — he can't have any of his supernatural abilities back until he successfully helps a tanuki cub named Manpachi become one of their magical assistants. Unfortunately for Senzou, there's no cheating when it comes to completing his task! The magic beads around his neck make sure he can't wander too far from his charge or shirk his duties, and so... Senzou the once-great Fox Spirit must now figure out how to be an actually-great babysitter to a mischievous little tanuki or risk being stuck without his powers forever!

The Fox & Little Tanuki is a modern fable rooted in ancient folklore, and a perfect introduction for any reader interested in learning a bit more about the rich mythology of Japan,” said Lena Atanassova, editor. “It's a story with a little something for everyone, a vibrant fantasy adventure with a lot of heart.”

Free Comic Book Day has been held on the first Saturday in May each year since 2002, when comic book retailers across North America and around the world give away select free comics to customers. A celebration of the comic arts, publishers submit a wide range of titles for consideration, from traditional American comics to Japanese manga to appeal to a wide range of fans. This will be TOKYOPOP's fourth year participating in the event.
