“Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” Powers up to #1 Opening Weekend in North America

The Film has Surpassed $20M at the Domestic Box Office
and is the Widest Opening of an Anime Film Ever

Culver City, California (August 21, 2022) – Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO, a Toei Animation film distributed in North America by Crunchyroll, had a supersized opening weekend, as fans and audiences flocked to theaters in support of the newest film in the global anime blockbuster franchise.

Garnering both critical and fan acclaim, Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO has brought in over $20.1M at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.

Breakout figures are as follows:

  • Thursday, August 18: $4,303,671
  • Friday, August 19: $6,584,653 (revised)
  • Saturday, August 20: $5,768,686
  • Sunday, August 21: $3,450,000 (estimate)

  • Total Opening Weekend: $20.100,000 (estimate)


The film, in its opening weekend alone, will be ranked as the #6 anime film in U.S. box office history.

The film marks the widest theatrical release ever for Crunchyroll in North America with 4,000+ screens in over 3100+ theaters. It is also the largest footprint of premium formats including IMAX, 4DX, Dolby Cinemas, MX4d, and DBox. The film, directed by Tetsuro Kodama with deep involvement from Dragon Ball's original creator Akira Toriyama, is available as both subtitled in Japanese as well as dubbed in English.

The Red Ribbon Army was once destroyed by Son Goku. Individuals, who carry on its spirit, have created the ultimate Androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. These two Androids call themselves “Super Heroes”. They start attacking Piccolo and Gohan… What is the New Red Ribbon Army's objective? In the face of approaching danger, it is time to awaken, Super Hero!

The film, with full commitment and deep involvement from Dragon Ball's original creator Akira Toriyama, has the legendary manga creator behind the film's original story, screenplay and character design.

Additionally, the film will be directed by Tetsuro Kodama and the Japanese voice actors for the film include Masako Nozawa (Son Goku, Son Gohan, and Son Goten), Toshio Furukawa (Piccolo), Aya Hisakawa (Bulma), Ryō Horikawa (Vegeta), Mayumi Tanaka (Krillin), Takeshi Kusao (Trunks), Yūko Minaguchi (Videl), Yūko Minaguchi (Pan), Miyu Irino (Dr. Hedo), Hiroshi Kamiya (Gamma 1), Mamoru Miyano (Gamma 2), Volcano Ota (Magenta), and Ryota Takeuchi (Carmine).

The Dragon Ball phenomena began in 1984 when Japan's well-known manga from Akira Toriyama premiered in Shueisha's “Weekly Shonen Jump” – becoming a top ranked title throughout its 10 and a half years of publication. Since then, the manga's popularity has continued to grow with an astonishing record of 260 million copies sold worldwide and counting.
