Trivia:

"Yawara" means "soft, gentle, or pliant", and is one of the possible readings for the 柔 character in 柔道 ("Judo"). It is also the name for the ancient martial art form that is recognised as the predecessor of Judo.

Women's Judo made it's debut at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, which is the Olympics of interest in the anime, "Yawara!"

Despite lacking general interest in the United States, Judo is now the 2nd most popular Olympic sport, behind track and field (or athletics,) in terms of number of countries participating.

The given name of Yawara's grandfather, Inokuma Jigoro, is also the given name of Kano Jigoro, who invented the sport.

In Episode 9, the ice cream store that looks like a Baskin Robbins is called Gogol 13 a reference to the manga and anime about a professional hitman.
