It kinda feels like you placed too much importance on the story mode. It’s a fighting game; most players aren’t playing for the story.

I find the story mode to be the selling point. To play events from the anime is what I find fun about the game, otherwise its just a lackluster arena fighting game.
As with the first I'll wait for sale under $20. |

You can make a fighting game with a serviceable story. |

I would probably play through the story mode just fine, not sure about the sidequests.
That being said, be interesting to compare it to the Ultimate Ninja Storm games. |

The thing in general Cyberconnect2's story modes tend to be really well especially when they expand fights by adding some really neat quick time events or create cutscenes not seen in the manga. Both their Naruto and Dragon Ball games are famous for that.

I think both sides make sense - fighting fans focus on mechanics, but for anime-based games the story mode is a big part of the appeal. Reliving those moments with solid combat feels like the best combo. Reading this review actually reminded me of how presentation and theme can really shape the experience - kind of like with the Dragon Tiger Luck demo, where the visual style and concept carry a lot of the appeal, even though it’s a simple game at its core.

Every time one of these arena fighters come out, I think of the game I’d rather have instead. With MHA it was a Marvel Ultimate Alliance style RPG, and Demon Slayer, once the movies are out…would be the Infinity Castle arc as a Metroidvania. Or they should take a hint from One Piece and license out to Koei-Tecmo for a Musou spinoff.
Till then, this is dismissible as being something for hardcore fans that casual gamers and fighting game aficionados will likely see as too shallow an experience. |

I hear you, but just like story mode is a huge part of the Demon Slayer experience for many fans, the atmosphere matters even in gaming. That’s why I enjoy platforms like 7bit casino they don’t just focus on gameplay, they capture the whole vibe that keeps players engaged.

I agree. It always strikes me as odd when I see people argue that the story for these anime tie-in games doesn't matter. To me, the core appeal of these sorts of games is pretty simple: you get a fun game that lets fans play through their favorite moments of the anime, and that (potentially, at least) shows off the coolest parts of the anime to people aren't fans. Both of those require a competent story mode. The NUNS games probably (for better or worse) represent the gold standard in this respect. And conversely (and because of that), I don't think the competitive element really matters as much as it does with other similar games -- that's just not the core appeal. |
