MyNavi Poll: When Fans Are Let Down by Foreign Live-Action Adaptations

Casting complaints top informal fan poll on adaptations of anime/games

On Tuesday, the Japanese website MyNavi posted the results of its member survey on when viewers feel let down by foreign live-action adaptations of Japanese anime or games.

Out of 380 votes cast by the self-selected male respondents, these were the top five choices:

1 The cast looks nothing like the characters from the original 42.9%
2 The protagonists have been turned from Japanese to foreigners 39.0%
3 The adaptation is completely different from the original 36.8%
4 There are characters with completely different personalities 23.7%
5 They just turned the original into a regular action movie 19.7%

Out of 482 votes cast by the self-selected female respondents, these were the top five choices:

1 The protagonists have been turned from Japanese to foreigners 45.2%
2 The cast looks nothing like the characters from the original 43.0%
3 The adaptation is completely different from the original 33.8%
4 There are characters with completely different personalities 20.8%
5 The signature lines don't work as well in a foreign language 19.7%

The survey was conducted among the users of the MyNavi News site's members when they logged in between February 10 and February 14, and multiple answers were allowed.
