Anime World Offers Condolences After Voice Actor Tomo Sakurai's Death

Although it was only a short few years in the mid-1990s, our time together was incredibly precious.
We will never forget your clear, gentle singing voice.

What a year it has been.
Someone important to me has passed away.
Tomo Sakurai-san, who made her re-debut in Dragon League (the television station's producer was the famous Kenji Shimizu), for which I supervised the series scripts, and who played the role of Marin in Lil' Red Riding Hood Cha-Cha, has passed away.
She was 53 years old.
So soon, way too soon.
May she rest in peace.

The last time I saw you was a while ago on BS-TBS's X Nengo no Kankeisha tachi [Those Involved X Years Later]. The theme was the "voice actor boom" -- specifically, the boom that began in the '90s and continued until recently, and she was definitely one of the people who started it all.
At the time, I thought, unlike someone like me who was lauded for their work, a true professional "idol voice actor" was someone like you. But now, seeing and hearing about how you thought of your fans and worked until the very end, right up until the moment of your death, and knowing you were still a true idol, my heart is filled with emotion.
The public and private sides of those days. You knew that, yet you persevered with a smile. I didn't understand at the time why you went to such lengths, but I respect the way you maintained that pride.
We worked together on many occasions, but the things that have stuck with me the most are those related to Rurouni Kenshin. Your thoughtfulness. Your acting. The time we spent talking. I'll never forget it.
You did a great job. Thank you so much for all your hard work.

Voice actor Tomo Sakurai passed away on August 13th.
She played the role of Meimi Haneoka/Saint Tail in TMS's Saint Tail, as well as appearing in TMS anime series such as Detective Conan and Live On Cardliver Kakeru.
