Anime World Offers Condolences After Voice Actor Tomo Sakurai's Death

posted on by Ken Iikura-Gross
Creators, artists, fans came together for their farewells

The anime world lost a renowned voice actor and singer with the announcement of Tomo Sakurai's death on August 13. She was known for her roles as Mylene Flare Jenius from the Macross franchise, Misao Makimachi from Rurouni Kenshin, Shayla-Shayla from El Hazard - The Magnificent World, Meimi Haneoka from Saint Tail, and Hinowa from Gintama. She was also a prolific singer, providing the singing voice of Mylene in a limited number of tracks (with Chie Kajiura singing on the rest) and performing theme songs from Lemon Angel, Super Doll Licca-chan, My-Otome, and The World God Only Knows, among others. Her work has touched the lives and hearts of creators and fans alike, and they are paying their respects to the late Sakurai.

Tomo Sakurai-san,

Although it was only a short few years in the mid-1990s, our time together was incredibly precious.
We will never forget your clear, gentle singing voice.
We offer our deepest condolences.

Hideki Mitsui (Scriptwriter)

What a year it has been.
Someone important to me has passed away.
Tomo Sakurai-san, who made her re-debut in Dragon League (the television station's producer was the famous Kenji Shimizu), for which I supervised the series scripts, and who played the role of Marin in Lil' Red Riding Hood Cha-Cha, has passed away.
She was 53 years old.
So soon, way too soon.
May she rest in peace.

Hirotaka Marufuji

My heartfelt condolences to Tomo Sakurai-san.
Mylene from Macross 7 was the best!
She will continue to be the best!

Ken Akamatsu

I pray for Tomo Sakurai-san's soul to rest in peace. She appeared in one OVA and was a very beautiful woman. Naru Narusegawa from Love Hina is like Kaho Shimizu from NOëL with her side bangs stretched out and mixed with Asuka. Lemon Angel was a song often played at Akamatsu Studio. It feels like the end of a certain generation of otaku.

Kōsuke Okano

I found out about Tomo Sakurai-chan on the news…

Manabi Mizuno

Tomo Sakurai-san,
I offer my heartfelt condolences.

Maria Yamamoto

I'm sorry. I can't keep up with my thoughts and can't comment.

But I'll still say it out loud.
I am sure it will reach Tomo-san.
My beloved Tomo Sakurai-san.
You gave me so much advice about work and my personal life, and you really cared for me.

You were always so kind, always composed no matter the situation, incredibly stylish, and breathtakingly beautiful.
Your singing voice and acting — everything about you — I've always loved it all so much.
I sincerely pray for your eternal rest.

Mayumi Iizuka

Tomo Sakurai-san.
When I worked with you shortly after I started working as a voice actor, I was impressed by your dazzling demeanor and presence.
You were always someone I looked up to.
Thank you for your kind smile when we met again at the studio after such a long time.
I wanted to work with you again.
May your soul rest in peace.

The last time I saw you was a while ago on BS-TBS's X Nengo no Kankeisha tachi [Those Involved X Years Later]. The theme was the "voice actor boom" -- specifically, the boom that began in the '90s and continued until recently, and she was definitely one of the people who started it all.
At the time, I thought, unlike someone like me who was lauded for their work, a true professional "idol voice actor" was someone like you. But now, seeing and hearing about how you thought of your fans and worked until the very end, right up until the moment of your death, and knowing you were still a true idol, my heart is filled with emotion.
The public and private sides of those days. You knew that, yet you persevered with a smile. I didn't understand at the time why you went to such lengths, but I respect the way you maintained that pride.
We worked together on many occasions, but the things that have stuck with me the most are those related to Rurouni Kenshin. Your thoughtfulness. Your acting. The time we spent talking. I'll never forget it.
You did a great job. Thank you so much for all your hard work.
Get plenty of rest.
Thank you, Tomo-chan.
See you on the next stage.

Nippon Ichi Software

We were extremely grateful for your hard work, including your role as Mayfair in Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero and hosting our concert last year.
We will never forget your warm personality and wonderful voice.
Thank you so much for everything you've done for us.

Noriko Hidaka

I am filled with disbelief at the news of Tomo Sakurai-chan's passing.
The first time I met her was at the studio for Lil' Red Riding Hood Cha-Cha.
Tomo-chan was so cute, bright and lively that she was dazzling, and I felt like a new era was upon us.
Tomo-chan, you did a great job.
Thank you for all your hard work. Rest in peace.

Taeko Kawata

Tomo Sakurai-chan
So true…
She had such a cute face and personality… She was so kind and had a lovely smile.
I'll never forget the smile I saw in the studio…
It's such a shame…
May her soul rest in peace.

Takanobu Terada (video game director)

I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to Tomo Sakurai. She played the role of Mylene (Macross 7) in Super Robot Wars. Although the recording was quite some time ago, I remember her showing great interest when I explained the singing system in the game.

Tenpei Sato (musician)

You were a wonderful MC at last year's concert, and I'll never forget your dazzling beauty for our reunion after such a long time.
May your soul rest in peace.

Toshiyuki Morikawa

May the soul of Tomo Sakurai rest in peace. We have been friends for a long time since Saint Tail, and I have always had great respect for his sincere attitude towards entertainment. I remember we kept in touch often when she was on hiatus. I was very happy when she made her comeback. The next time we meet, I will definitely go see Tomo-chan's stage performance.

Yōko Itō (animator)

I love, love, love her thena and now.
It was a long time ago, but I still cherish the memory of drawing a key of Misao, played by Tomo Sakurai, in one of my favorite series.
May she rest in peace.

Yoshiki Fukuyama (musician, singing voice of Nekki Basara from Macross 7)

The sad news of Tomo Sakurai-san's passing.
At this year's Super Robot Spirits concert, I sang Tomo's part in “Friends -Jiku wo Koete” with Mari Iijima.
I was hoping to see you again, so I'm very sad.
May her soul rest in peace.

Yūko Nagashima

Tomo Sakurai-san.
Whether it was Saint Tail or on the radio… I often worked with you when I was younger, and I always admired you as a dazzling person.
May your soul rest in peace.

Yumiko Shibata

Tonight's drawing.
I've changed the content.
Tomo Sakurai-san has been invited to heaven.✨ I'm shocked by the sudden news.
I loved her as Meimi Haneoka/Saint Tail in Saint Tail.
I drew with the hope of seeing Tomo-san again.
I pray for her eternal rest.🙏

Sakurai will be deeply missed by her colleagues and fans. While we will never hear her voice again, her memory will always be in the series she took part in.
