Saiki K. Creator Overhears Women Talking About His Manga at Bookstore
posted on by Ken Iikura-Gross

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. creator Shūichi Asō recounted on August 3 a chance encounter (sort of) he had at a bookstore. Aso said he overheard two women exclaim, “Oh! The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.” while he was at the undisclosed store. Aso noted he felt happy people were still reading his series — until he noticed the women were looking at a poster showcasing the variant cover art that guest artists drew for the Dragon Ball 40th Anniversary manga set.
Aso added that he imagined the conversation the two women had prior to mentioning The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.: “Who is the person who drew volume 37's variant cover? I know all the others, but I don't know him. I'll Google him.” Aso joked he should have surprised the two women by saying, “Hey! I'm Aso!” in the style of Dragon Ball protagonist Son Goku.
Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine serialized The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. between May 2012 and February 2018. The manga inspired an anime series in 2016 and a live-action film in 2017. As Aso noted, he provided the variant cover art for the 37th volume in the Dragon Ball 40th Anniversary manga set.
