Monster's Urasawa Draws Poster for Charity Car Rally Event

Monster and 20th Century Boys manga creator Naoki Urasawa has drawn a poster for an upcoming classic car charity event to support the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami-affected Miyagi prefecture.

The poster reads "GO! GO! Rally in Tohoku -Classic car meeting 2019-" with Urasawa's rendition of founder and actor Toshiaki Karasawa. The rally event will include classic automobiles including Karasawa's favorite Porsche 356 Speedster. The event will last for two days as the group travels from Miyagi, Ishinomaki, Onagawa, and other affected areas on October 5 and 6.

Karasawa dreamed up the idea three years ago as a way to combine his hobby with helping the community. He said that when he'd drive through rural areas, he'd see elderly residents wave as his car passed.

Urasawa and the 56-year-old actor will be part of a rally team. The duo first met during the filming and release of the 20th Century Boys live-action trilogy in 2008 and 2009. Karasawa played Kenji Endō in the movies. The poster shows the number 20 on a car in the background, a nod to Karasawa's appearance in 20th Century Boys.

Karasawa jokingly apologized if he used his "drunken energy" to convince Urasawa to participate in the event.

Urasawa (Yawara!, Master Keaton, 20th Century Boys, Pluto) is currently serializing cite>Renzoku Manga Shōsetsu Asadora! (Serial Manga Novel Asadora!) in Shogakukan's Weekly Big Comic Spirits. Viz Media has published Urasawa's 20th Century Boys, 21st Century Boys, Monster, and Pluto manga in English.
