Sony, Marza Animation Planet to Make Sonic the Hedgehog Movie

CG-animated/live-action hybrid film to include villain character Dr. Eggman

The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog is reporting on Tuesday that Sony and Marza Animation Planet are collaborating to make a hybrid computer-animated and live-action feature film based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise.

Neal Moritz (Fast & Furious franchise) is producing the film, and Evan Susser and Van Robichaux (both former members of the Upright Citizens Brigade sketch comedy troupe) are writing the screenplay. Takeshi Ito and Mie Ōnishi from Marza are also serving as producers, and Toby Ascher is serving as executive producer.

The billion-dollar Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has sold more than 140 million video games worldwide. Heat Vision reports that the movie will include the villain character Dr. Eggman.

Marza Animation Planet, a wholly owned Sega Sammy Holdings subsidiary, previously produced last year's Captain Harlock CG-animated film.

The Internet domain names sonicthehedgehog-movie.com, sonicthehedgehog-movie.net, and sonicthehedgehogmovie.net were registered in the United States last December.

A new CG animated series, titled Sonic Boom, will debut on Cartoon Network in the United States this fall, and the new series is also inspiring a Nintendo 3DS and Wii U game in November. Other American cartoons inspired by the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise include the 1993 series Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog. The Sonic Underground animated series first ran from 1999 to 2000.

The original video games have also inspired various anime projects, including the Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie original video anime in 1996. The Sonic X television anime series (pictured above right) premiered in Japan from 2003 to 2004.
