Square Enix began streaming a promotional video for A Certain Magical Index: Imaginary Fest (Toaru Majutsu no Index: Imaginary Fest), the new smartphone game based on A Certain Magical Index franchise, on Friday. The video previews the game's theme song "JUNCTION" by Maon Kurosaki.
Square Enix and NBCUniversal's AnimeJapan 2019 booths will both feature 50-inch touchscreen monitors that let visitors interact with the game characters (displayed using Live2D software), and participating visitors will receive stickers while supplies last.
The "academy supernatural powers battle role-playing game" will launch this year. The game will be free to play, but there will be optional in-game charges.
The game will feature characters not just from the anime and anime film projects, but also characters from the novel series and spinoff manga as well. The game will reproduce scenes from the anime in 3D. Players can create "dream teams" of decks of their favorite characters.
A Certain Magical Index III, the third television anime season based on Kazuma Kamachi's A Certain Magical Index light novel series, premiered in Japan on October 5, and it will have 26 episodes. Funimation and Crunchyroll are streaming the series as it airs.
Kamachi's light novel series has inspired two previous television anime series, a 2013 anime film, and multiple manga adaptations. The A Certain Scientific Railgun spinoff manga has also inspired two television anime adaptations and an original video anime (OVA). The third anime season will premiere this year. The A Certain Scientific Accelerator (Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator) manga is also inspiring a television anime adaptation that will premiere this year.
The franchise previously inspired two PlayStation Portable games in 2011 and 2013. The A Certain Magical Virtual-On (To Aru Majutsu no Virtual-On) crossover game launched on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in Japan in February 2018. Previous mobile games in the franchise include Toaru Majutsu no Index Struggle Battle, which ran from 2012 through March 2018, and Toaru Majutsu to Kagaku no Puzzle Decks, which launched in 2014 and ended service in 2016.
