posted on by Wonhee Cho

Kye-young Chon, the creator behind the manhwa Audition and the webtoon Love Alarm, has made her debut as a web novelist. According to Korean web novel platform Kakao Page, her new web novel Born to Be King was officially released on May 24.
The story is set in a fictional world where individuals are assigned a gender not at birth, but through a ceremonial rite at the age of 10. The narrative follows Lee Jin, a child once prophesied to become a wise and powerful king — only to be unexpectedly assigned female during the rite. The story explores identity, power, and societal expectations through Jin's journey in a world that no longer views her as the chosen heir.
Season 1 of the web novel comprises 90 chapters, with Season 2 currently in development.
Chon, a pioneer in Korea's comics and webtoon scene, debuted in 1996 after winning the grand prize in Seoul Cultural Publisher's Wink magazine rookie competition. She has since built a career defined by genre-defying, trendsetting works across print comics and webtoons.
In 2011, she transitioned into webtoons with Dress Code. She later created Love Alarm, which was adapted into a Netflix series. She also expanded the Love Alarm universe by allowing other creators to contribute new works through both webtoons and web novels.
Currently, there is no official English version of the Born to Be King web novel. However, fans can read Love Alarm on Tapas.
