Episode 1130 of One Piece twists the knife emotionally as Kuma's backstory continues.

The God Valley incident has it all for a One Piece flashback. A legendary team-up between two noted figures in Kuma and Ivankov, the revelation of how Kuma and Kaidou originally got their Devil Fruit Powers, and a cavalcade of noteworthy pirates and Navy admirals in their much younger years going head to head in open battle. Not to mention the continued excesses of the World Government and Celestial Dragons and how Kuma and Ginny started their journey together. It's hard to imagine asking for much more in a flashback sequence.

The God Valley incident has slowly but surely taken on ever greater importance over the years. It was never unimportant, but the steady drumbeat from being just part of the formation of Garp's legend to being this centralizing event for many of the most important figures in the current One Piece melodrama is quite interesting. I like how Oda has carefully increased its mystique and delicately balances explanation and mystery. We know infinitely more about the God Valley incident than ever before, but not all of our questions are answered nor is everything shown on camera. We know there was some kind of titanic clash once the Rocks pirates, Roger pirates, and Garp's division arrived, but we never see much more than their initial foray into the action. This leaves us knowing more and wanting more at the same time, a frustratingly delightful place to be.

Kuma and Ginny's continued adventures are equally sweet and heartbreaking. Ginny protects Kuma from bullies, Kuma prays for the lives he couldn't save, and both of them weep after having full bellies for what is likely the first time ever… it's enough to make you ugly cry. Just a terrific episode all around.
