Naver Webtoon announced that Takehiko Inoue's legendary basketball manga Slam Dunk New Edition debuted digitally in Korea for the first time on August 29 on Naver Webtoon and Naver Series.
Slam Dunk New Edition was first released digitally in Japan in June. The series is available on Naver Webtoon as a limited two-month service, while Naver Series will continue to offer the full set of digital volumes.
The New Edition comprises 20 volumes, with Inoue personally restructuring the story's flow from the original 31-volume run. While the content remains faithful to the original, the re-edition compresses the narrative for pacing and features all-new, full-color illustrated covers.
Originally serialized from 1990 to 1996, Takehiko Inoue's Slam Dunk is widely credited with sparking a basketball boom in Japan and remains one of the best-selling manga series of all time, with more than 170 million copies in circulation worldwide.
The manga inspired a television anime in 1993, and it received four anime film sequels. The manga more recently inspired The First Slam Dunk anime film, which opened in Japan in December 2022. Netflix began streaming the film in the United States in August 2024. Inoue personally directed the film at Toei Animation and wrote the script.
