The official X (formerly Twitter) account for San Jose's FanimeCon event announced on Friday it will launch Manga Ichiba, an event for artists who make and sell self-published comics and other materials (known as dōjinshi in Japanese), in 2026. The organizers claim the new event will be North America's first event of its kind for English-language dōjinshi.

FanimeCon has opened a website for the event with more details.

FanimeCon 2025 was held on May 23-26 at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California.

The San Francisco Bay Area once hosted the Alternative Press Expo for alternative comics from 1994 to 2017. Comic-Con International organized the event for its entire history (except for its first year), in addition to San Diego Comic-Con

Japan frequently hosts similar events throughout the year, including the Comic Market event. The first Comiket drew an estimated 700 attendees for 32 exhibiting circles in December 1975. Tokyo's Harumi area, Chiba's Makuhari Messe venue, and other places hosted the event before it moved to its current Tokyo Big Sight location for Comiket 50 in 1996. Comic Market (Comiket) 106 ran from August 16-17 at Big Sight in Tokyo and drew about 250,000 people.
