Anime Central 2007
Dark Horse Manga

by Mikhail Koulikov,

Dark Horse Comics

Dark Horse Comics editor Carl Horn ran the first industry panel at Anime Central's tenth-anniversary event. He began the session by talking about two of the fiction titles Dark Horse will be publishing. The first of these is the Dirty Pair novel series, written by Haruka Takachiho. The first volume, Great Adventure of the Dirty Pair, is scheduled for July 13. The second is Oh My Goddess!: First End. This novel is written by Yumi Touma, the voice actress who plays Urd in both the original OVA and the newer TV incarnation of the series, and features original illustrations by Hidenori Matsubara, the OVA and TV character designer. A preview of the novel will be included in Oh My Goddess! volume 27.

After first announcing this license at the 2006 New York Comic-Con and following the announcement with a press release this April, Dark Horse is ready to announce the release date for Kazuhiro Okamoto's Translucent. The first volume of this series about an introverted high school student who is literally turning invisible as a result of a mysterious sickness will be published on July 25. Although Translucent was not originally published in a shōjo magazine, Horn thinks it will appeal to female readers in the same way that Oh My Goddess! has.

Carl then expanded on another NYCC '06 license, an American translation of the illustration tutorial SS Magazine. The first issue of the US translation, which will be retitled Style School will hit store shelves on August 15. It will contain sections on six individual illustration techniques (watercolor pen, Photoshop style, colored ink, watercolor brush, Liquitex, and combinations of 2D and 3D computer-generated art), as well as some 360 color images and 90 black-and-white samples spread over 144 pages. Style School will be priced at $14.95, and further issues of the magazine will follow once every three months.

Of Dark Horse's current titles, volume 4 of Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service is also scheduled for an August release. In Japan, the series had been on hiatus for some time, but volume 6 has now been published. To avoid catching up with the Japanese releases, publication of the following two US volumes will be held up.
