Gintama Manga Has 55 Million Copies in Print

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

Kadokawa's NewsWalker news website reported on Friday that Hideaki Sorachi's Gintama manga has more than 55 million copies in print. Shueisha had revealed in May 2016 that the manga has 50 million copies in print.

Sorachi began the manga in 2004, and the series is celebrating its 14th anniversary on Monday. Viz Media published the first 23 volumes in English. Shueisha published the manga's 71st volume on December 4. The manga entered its final arc in July 2016, and will reach the climax of the arc on Monday.

The current anime series premiered on October 1, and began with the "Porori Arc" story. The anime began adapting the "Silver Soul" arc, the final arc of the manga, on January 7. Crunchyroll is streaming the series as it airs in Japan.

Crunchyroll streamed the previous anime series as it aired in Japan, and is also streaming English-dubbed episodes. The manga also inspired two anime films, including the "final" Gekijōban Gintama Kanketsu-hen: Yorozuya yo Eien Nare film that opened in 2013, and various OVAs and event anime.

The manga also inspired a live-action film that opened in Japan on July 14. The film will get a sequel that will premiere in Japan on August 17.
