Ponkotsu Quest Monsters Go Viking in Vinland Saga Parody

posted on by Eric Stimson

In September, Kodansha announced in Afternoon magazine that its Viking-themed manga Vinland Saga would get a crossover web anime with the VAP series Ponkotsu Quest. The result, Ponkotsuland Saga, was posted on YouTube on October 23.

After an introduction, "Kakufinn" swears to kill "Imuladd," his father's sworn enemy. Imuladd apologizes, then tells Kakufinn to fight "Tsuchikell," as was previously arranged. Kakufinn scoffs at him. "Kuronute" appears for moral support. Kakufinn still doesn't want to go, fearing an ambush. Imuladd assures him that Small Ear Bones (Yabuki) can tell him whether there are other enemies lying in wait. Small Ear Bones is instantly proven wrong by "the guy Kakufinn fooled in Chapter 1" (Mitsui), who Kakufinn surmises is supposed to be "the big-mouthed guy" from Vinland Saga. After some trash talk, Kakufinn and Tsuchikell fight... but Kakufinn is creamed in one blow. After Imuladd revives him, he decides to start a country where heroes and monsters can live in peace... even though neither exist in Vinland Saga. He also dodges the question of why he's so weak.

Ponkotsu Quest is a web anime depicting an RPG scenario akin to Dragon Quest from the point of view of the inept monsters that oppose the hero. It can be watched here (Japanese only).
