GKIDS announced on Instagram on Wednesday it has acquired the North American rights to Ghost Cat Anzu director Nobuhiro Yamashita's 2005 Linda Linda Linda film. The company will screen a 4k remaster of the film in celebration of the 20th anniversary at the Tribeca Film Festival, which runs from June 4-15 in New York City. The film will also have a theatrical and home release in 2025.
The film originally debuted in Japan in 2005, and Viz Pictures released the film on DVD in 2007. The film follows an all-girls high school rock band, who must recruit a new lead vocalist before their high school festival in three days.
The film stars Bae Doona (The Host, Broker), Aki Maeda (Battle Royale), Yu Kashii (Death Note), and Shiori Sekine (Base Ball Bear band member).
It features original tracks composed by James Iha of The Smashing Pumpkins, song covers from THE BLUE HEARTS, and songs from Base Ball Bear.
The film also inspired the name of the band The Linda Lindas.
