Umaibō Corn Snack's Moe Character Gets Life-Size Statue

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Yaokin's line of Umaibō puffed corn snacks have crossed over with anime including Sword Art Online, Madoka Magica, Attack on Titan, and Kan Colle. Now the snack's official character Umami-chan is getting a chance to stand on her own without the backing of an anime franchise. A life-size statue of the character debuted in the Loft store in Abeno, Osaka on Saturday.

The figure is 153 centimeters (about five feet) tall, and she wears a 20-centimeter (eight-inch) "Umaibōshi" hat in the image of the corn snack. The figure's outfit recreates the packaging of cheese-flavor Umaibō. The cylindrical snacks revealed Umami-chan in Febraury as the younger sister of the character Umaemon, who already appears on packaging and advertising.

Yaokin's new business development director Kazuhiro Matsumoto said the company took about a month and a half to develop the statue. He hopes it can be part of a nationwide campaign.

The figure was only on display at the store until Sunday. A costumed character version of Umaemon also appeared to pose for pictures with Umami-chan.
