London Cosplayers Featured in The Sun Newspaper

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Cosplay culture has favourable coverage in British tabloid

The coverage of youngers who adopt Japanese-style fashions and costumes has not always been sympathetic in British newspapers. For example, in 2012, the Daily Mail tabloid ran an article about teenagers turning themselves "into freakish living dolls".

For that reason, it's heartening that Britain's tabloid newspaper The Sun has just run a favourable article, now available online, about cosplay. The female reporter, Georgie Culley, tries cosplay herself as she interviews participants at the recent Hyper Japan event in London.

Although the article makes a brief mention of the issue of harassment of female cosplayers, the article emphasises the appeal and enjoyment of cosplay, rather than presenting it as an inscrutable sub-culture. Indeed, the cosplayers are described as "normal people with normal jobs."
