Prepare Yourself for 3 Hours of Mayoi Neko Overrun's Opening Theme

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
New Year's Eve streaming tradition continues

The cat-girl centered romantic comedy Mayoi Neko Overrun! never made its way stateside but it's opening theme "Happy New Nyaa" by voice actresses Kanae Itō, Yuka Iguchi and Ayana Taketatsu is the purrfect fit for Abema TV's special New Year's Eve program. The streaming service is challenging its viewers to sit through a three-hour looping broadcast of the song starting at 7:00 a.m. JST on New Year's Eve.

This isn't the first time Abema TV has put out this particular challenge. The stream has become a strange sort of New Year's tradition following its broadcast last year. The song will plays 108 times in its three hour time span, a sacred number in Buddhism.

Tomohiro Matsu's Mayoi Neko Overrun! (Stray Cats Overrun!) romantic comedy light novels inspired an anime adaptation in 2009. The story revolves around Takumi Tsuzuki, a boy who lives with his older "sister" Otome, although the two have no blood ties between them. Otome manages a run-down confectionary store called Stray Cats. One day, Otome picks up a mysterious beautiful girl off the streets.

To Love-Ru -Trouble- manga artist Kentarō Yabuki drew the manga adaptation for two volumes before it ended abruptly in 2011. Matsu ended the light novel series shortly after with a total of 12 volumes. He later wrote the Listen to Me, Girls. I Am Your Father! and Märchen Mädchen novel series before he passed away in 2016.
