Follow Vulpix's Journey Across Hokkaido on 15 Pokémon Manhole Covers

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Earlier this year Iwate rolled out a series of Rock- or Ground-type Pokémon manhole covers across the prefecture. Now, Japan's most northern prefecture is following in Iwate footsteps and adding 15 manhole covers to cities in Hokkaido.

Iwate's manhole covers offered fans different Pokémon to seek out but Hokkaido is offering a different approach by taking tourists on a journey alongside its tourism support Pokémon Alolan Vulpix (Rokon). Each cover design is one of a kind and shows Vulpix (in Alolan and original form) interacting with different Pokémon. Unlike other prefectures, Hokkaido's manhole covers are spread greater distances and tourists will have to travel further if they want to see them all. Each manhole will also host a PokéStop for Pokémon GO players.

The locations are listed in English on the official Pokémon manhole cover website.

  • Vulpix and Alolan Ninetails near Teshio Elementary and Junior High Schools in Teshio
  • Alolan Vulpix and Piplup near Pipi Cafe Pippu Station in Pippu
  • Alolan Vulpix, Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie at the Ashoro Tourism Center in Ashoro
  • Vulpix surrounded by flowers at the Hana Road Eniwa Rest Area in Eniwa
  • Vulpix and Chimchar outside the Sea of Japan Information Exchange Center in Kaminokuni
  • Alolan Vulpix and Froslass at the Engaru Rock Valley Ski Area in Engaru (installation on December 6)

Locals and visitors have already snapped photos of a few of the covers out in the wild.

There are plans for the Pokémon manhole covers to expand throughout Japan with over 70 spread throughout the country.
