NBC Quitting Saturday Morning as well
posted on by Christopher Macdonald
According to this Reuters article on Yahoo!, NBC, like Fox, has decided to follow CBS's lead and quit the Saturday morning childrens broadcasting game. Citing ratings losses to Cable specialty channels such as Cartoon Network, FOX and NBC are not looking to terminate childrens broadcasting on Saturday morning, but rather to lease the blocks to content Packagers. CBS licenced its Saturday morning broadcast to Nickelodeon; 4kids, DiC and Nelvana have been listed as possible suitors for Fox's and NBC's blocks.
The article also goes more into depth about the reasons behind these major changes at NBC and Fox.
Other possible outcomes, not listed in this article but brought up in the past, include Fox redesigning it's Saturday morning broadcasts to target an older audience. However it doesn't seem like NBC is seriously considering such a drastic change, the Reuters article quotes one Fox employee as saying "it would be difficult, considering the number of children watching TV on Saturdays, to program exclusively for adults."
