What's It About?

at-your-service-cover
Two years after Rin Tachibana, a romance-challenged woman approaching thirty, was unexpectedly whisked away to another world, she has settled into a quiet life as a clerk for the Magic Knights. But when the king secretly orders her to service her arrogant colleague Oscar Garland—a notorious misogynist—her peaceful routine goes off the rails! Yet, watching the proud knight unravel under her touch sparks a surprising thrill. Now, Rin must juggle her day job with her after-hours activities, all while keeping her late-night duties a secret. But can she really keep her cool working alongside him by day while bringing him to his knees at night?

At Your Service in Another World has a story by nekoyashiki G and art by Pan Yamada, with English translation by Alyssa Niioka. Ludwig Sacramento letters this volume. Published by Seven Seas (March 18, 2025). Rated M.

You gotta love the ludicrousness of smutty manga plots. At Your Service in Another World has a particularly silly one: in the world Rin literally fell into two years ago, people can suffer mana poisoning if they don't let their opposite mana (yin and yang) out, and naturally the way to do that is sex. So when Oscar Garland, the grouchy woman-hating guard captain, returns from his two-year long assignment and doesn't hate Rin on sight, the king and guard commander ask Rin to be his “medical assistant.” In this volume, that means lots of hand jobs, but things will almost certainly go further later, because this is a book in Seven Seas' Steamship line.

Rin is really only helping Oscar because she's allowed to hide her identity, and that proves to be one of the better plot mechanics of the story. Because he doesn't know that his helping hand is her, Oscar's romantic attraction towards Rin is able to happen organically. Yes, he fantasizes about her being the mysterious hooded woman, but that's mere wish fulfillment on the part of his imagination. Rin the person is who he's actually interested in, with her no-nonsense attitude and willingness to do what she needs to to get things done. Does that stop the king and the guard commander from realizing that Rin and Oscar have couple potential? Absolutely not, and the two of them quietly matchmaking behind the scenes is kind of cute.

Although this doesn't fall into the lazy isekai trope of using video game elements, this is still very firmly in that genre. Like other adult isekai stories (where adult refers to the age of the protagonist; Rin is twenty-nine), we get a lot of commentary about Rin's inability to rest and devotion to work, and the whole sex-and-mana thing is very similar to The Other World's Books Depend on the Bean Counter. But Rin isn't as much of a workaholic as Sei from The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent, and there are some other nice details, like Rin getting a family when an older couple take her in after her isekai experience. Both she and Oscar have other things going on in their lives, and that, although not a major part of the plot, does help to ground things.

There isn't really anything hugely objectionable about this story. It's implied that Oscar has some sexual trauma in his past, but mostly the plot just sort of skips merrily along, touching down lightly on its points before moving on to the next sex scene. It's fluffy and readable, and even though it's not spectacular, it's easy to recommend as a manga beach read.
