Shota manga is... well, disgusting. But I guess not illegal.
I am surprised to see that the main audience is apparently male because I had assumed that like loli manga being geared toward men, shota was geared toward woman. > >

I believe it's moreso to do with the themes it expresses as it dwells deep into the touchy topic of manipulation, to sort of point out that yes, women can be just as fucked up as men. I mean it's basically exploring a heartbroken and confused woman who fell infatuated with a little orphan boy, in which she felt like she wanted to protect him and care for him like a mother, but eventually turns into a cesspool of her sinister intents of taking advantage of the little boy who just hit puberty and has only begun exploring his feelings and slowly seducing him towards her which is where things get realistically fucked. I think dudes are getting attracted to this bc it explores a rather mature topic that mostly boys can sympathise with for the most part.

Question regarding that. I was under the impression the series was more about romanticizing their relationship, mostly based on descriptions I read. Is it more accurate to say that it is actively trying to depict predatory behavior?

I was hesitant about Koi wa Ameagari no You ni lst season and that one turned out to be a really nice anime that never really touched on the dark side it potentially could have with its premise. Based on the description of this one in the article it is exactly what I feared Koi wa Ameagari no You ni was going to be. Definitely one I am going to skip and honestly something like this should never get made into a show.

Nope, I read a few volumes and so far there's nothing like that. It's a great story with interesting characters. I don't interested in shotacon and I happy that this manga isn't about that stuff. And I love that author takes a realistic approach in storytelling (I won't write any spoilers, but I think you get what I talking about considering the summary). So far it reminds me about KoiAme, Usagi drop and BokuMachi.

I mean if you read the first chapter, you will see a lot foreshadowing as to what she was to become and a lot of ironic moments towards it. The series likes to explore the predatory side of her psychologically, but not like Lolita where it was just downright disturbing, but more like Perfect Blue in which she was doing most things unconsciously and the boy simply reacted to it with his hormones which create a confused demented internal and external conflict. Basically, she's battling with her feelings of whether she feels motherly love towards him or if its anything more than that but while she does so she ends up unintentionally but slowly and sinisterly seducing the boy and taking advantage of him in the process, but luckily nothing actually happens that drives it levels of predatory behaviour in a sense. But the chick does seriously need help though; she needs to get her psyche in cheque to make sure she doesn't fly off of the radar some day.
