New Nintendo 2DS XL Slime Console Oozes into Stores on July 29

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The Dragon Quest franchise is celebrating its 30th anniversary. This means tons of tie-in merchandise featuring the series' iconic slime monster, not only to mark the achievement but also to hop on the upcoming release of Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete (Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time). The game is slated to ship for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo 3DS, and the Nintendo Switch this year.

The PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS versions are slated for release on July 29. Hori, the creator of a number of Slime-based accessories, is releasing a PS4 Slime controller the same day. Nintendo is joining in too, with a Metal Slime New Nintendo 2DS LL console. The top shows a shiny metal slime oozing from the corner against a black pattern of Dragon Quest icons. Inside, a small metal slime smiles at the player.

Amazon is selling the regular edition for 27,990 yen and a special edition that includes a Danboard kit for 30,500 yen.

The New Nintendo 2DS XL (LL in Japan) launches in Japan on July 13 and on July 28 in North America. The Slime version goes on sale in Japan on July 29. Like the New Nintendo 3DS XL, the new variant will offer the same 82% larger screen size in comparison to the original Nintendo 3DS, as well as new "ZL" and "ZR" shoulder buttons. The console will also have a faster processor, and will be compatible with Amiibos. The New Nintendo 2DS XL will be compatible with all Nintendo 3DS and some Nintendo DS games. Like the previous Nintendo 2DS variant, the XL version will not be able to display games with the 3D functionality.
