NHK Hosts Historical Mystery-Solving Event in Ashikaga

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Broadcaster NHK's Utsunomiya station is hosting a history-themed mystery-solving event in Ashikaga, Tochigi on June 10 starring original character Maru Taiga. Participants will attempt to retrieve stolen treasure with guidance from the character, voiced by Kōsuke Toriumi.

The event will take place around the historical Ashikaga Gakkō, Japan's oldest academic institution. The building is believed to have been originally constructed in the ninth century. Players will walk around the area of Ashikaga to gather clues to find the location of the stolen treasure. Participation is free.

NHK will also host a radio program and lecturer on swordsmanship at the site during the event. DJ Hidekazu Kawakubo, actress Masumi Horiguchi, and comedian Kunihiro Matsumura will host the radio program and swordsman Kunishiro Nakagawa and historical-focused talent Sakura Oguri will participate in the lecture.

Character Maru Taiga is one of four created as part of NHK's commentary site "NHK Kyun Katsu Hottora in~Jushin kara Hajimaru Koi~". Maru Taiga commentates on the channel's long-running historical Taiga Drama series.
